[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 24, 2017 (June 12 – June 18) [Top 50]

Media Create

This week, there was only one new entry in the Top 20 from Media Create: ARMS, on the Nintendo Switch. It’s off to a great start, with 100 652 units sold during the first 3 days (which means about 1/10 of all Nintendo Switch owners ended up buying the game). That’s better than both Street Fighter V and Tekken 7, two established and well-known series, despite being a brand new IP nobody knew about before January.

As comparison, Splatoon opened with 144 000 units back in 2015, and on a much bigger installed base (+3 million Wii U units had been sold by then). ARMS did pretty well, but it’s just the beginning: the real test is the upcoming weeks and months. Will it keep selling steadily, like Splatoon did? Or will it just falter and disappear from the Top 20 in a couple of weeks, never to be seen again?

Since Nintendo is planning to keep supporting the game by releasing frequent updates (adding new characters, stages, etc.), this should keep player engaged on the long run. This is definitely going to help with word of mouth, which is going to be what makes or break ARMS,. Will it be merely a midly successful new IP, or the first entry in a long-running series?

The increase in Nintendo Switch sales (or rather, shipments!) benefited to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sold 16 822 units this week (+1%). But it’s not the only game to have benefited from that, as you can see for yourself below!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of them, with +15% in sales this week. It sold 10 200 additional units, which brought it over the 500 000 units threshold (it’s currently sitting at 504 726 units). We’ve seen that in the past few months: sales of that game are heavily influenced by the amount of Nintendo Switch units shipped to retailers (they go up when Nintendo ships more, and they go down when less units are shipped).

Speaking of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Wii U version sold 2 242 units this week (133 024 units since launch). Combined, both versions have sold 637 750 units since launch. In order for them to reach 1 million units before the end of the year, they need to sell the remaining 362 250 units during the enxt 28 weeks, so at least 12 937 units/week.

Unfortunately for Capcom, Monster Hunter XX sales slowed down this week, though the drop remains limited for now (-15%). The 8 638 additional units sold this week bring the total to 1 521 453 units since launch. It doesn’t look it’s going to reach 2 million units any time soon (if ever, depending on whether the Nintendo Switch version cuts in its sales or not).

The drop is even worse for Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X, but nothing to worry about for Bandai-Namco. After all, the game has now sold 167 050 units since launch, and the upcoming Summer holidays are going to bring the total to well over 200 000 units. It should end the year with 250 000 to 300 000 units.

Finally, Pokémon Sun and Moon saw a very slight increase in sales, with 2 971 units sold this week (+1%). It doesn’t look like the recent announcement of Pokémon Ultra and Ultra Moon has had any impact at all on sales, but it’s most likely not something that will be noticeable until after the Summer holidays are over (in September specifically).

Next, here’s how the various games in the second half of the Top 20 are selling:

  • 12./05. [NSW] Seiken Densetsu Collection  (Square Enix) – 2.835 / 37.728 (-47%). Nothing much to say about the sales trajectory of this particular title, which is anything but surprising;
  • 13./12. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 2.747 / 190.346 (-6%). Since the whole market being rather slow at the moment, this one is staying in the Top 20 one more week. It doesn’t look like it’s going to drop from it any time soon;
  • 14./14. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 2.618 / 222.668 (-4%). Sales remain steady, and it will be interesting to see if the upcoming Summer holidays will have a noticeable impact on them;
  • 15./13. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 2.599 / 1.052.401 (-5%). Another game with steady sales, and without the help of any public holidays;
  • 17./18. [3DS] Mario Sports Superstars (Nintendo) – 2.195 / 102.977 (-6%). With over 100 000 units sold since launch, this one is doing better than what Week 1 sales led us to believe;
  • 18./21. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) – 2.145 / 2.783.005. Yup, it’s that game from 2011 that made yet another comeback in the Top 20!
  • 19./20. [3DS] Pro Baseball Famista Climax (Bandai Namco Games) – 2.135 / 86.616 (-2%). 100 000 units should be reached during the Summer holidays.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales increased noticeably, with 10 000 more units than during the previous week (37 709 units). It’s quite clear that Nintendo shipped more Nintendo Switch consoles for the launch of ARMS, but nowhere near the necessary amount to meet demand. Therefore, it’s no surprise that shortages still persist to this very day, and in fact, they’re most likely going to stay at least until the end of the year.

The “sad” thing about ARMS is that the increase in Nintendo Switch sales isn’t really due to its launch, at least not directly. Granted, Nintendo did ship more units to retailers that week, but the demand for the console it’s still extremely high, and even without ARMS, every single units shipped would have been sold anyway.

By the way, the Nintendo Switch came very close to the 1 million units threshold this week: 991 659 units sold since launch as of Week 24. If only Nintendo had shipped a few more units this week, the Nintendo Switch would already be a million-seller (well, technically, it will already have by the time you read this!).

It will be interesting to see how many units Nintendo ships in the weeks leading to Splatoon 2. Will the company choose to ship a steady amount, at this week’s level (about 35 000-40 000 units), or will we see a drop as units are stockpiled? It’s hard to say at the moment, but one thing’s clear as day: shortages are there to stay.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales were flat this week, with about 15 000 units sold. For the first time in a while, sales are down Year on Year for that particular week, and the drop is quite noticeable (about 7 000 units). Unfortunately, it’s not clear what this drop is due to for now… anticipation for the New Nintendo 2DS XL, maybe? No doubt the lack of new releases didn’t help either.

The thing is, there’s no major release before July 13th, and the New Nintendo 2DS XL + a slew of games (including Hey! Pikmin and Ever Oasis, among others). We can expect remain to remain slow until then.

Finally, the Wii U sold 199 units this week.
