Capcom: comments on Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice sales, results for Q1 FY 2016

Capcom – Financial Results for Q1 2016-2017

Today, Capcom revealed its financial results for Q1 2016-2017, and unfortunately, they’re not very good. Here’s some raw data to start:

  • Net sales: 10,927 million Yen (-24.9% compared to Q1 2015-16)
  • Operating incoming: 726 million Yen loss (compared with to 2,026 million Yen profits for Q1 2015-16)
  • Ordinary income: 2,080 million Yen loss (compared to 2,135 million Yen profits for Q1 2015-16)
  • Net income attributable to owners of the parent: 1,411 million Yen loss (compared to 1,569 million Yen profits for Q1 2015-16), caused by the strong Yen

Capcom – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice

The company explains that during the first three months of the current Fiscal Year, it focused on minor titles (as opposed to the second half of the Fiscal Year, which is prioritised and therefore gets the bigger titles). One of them is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, which “sold largely as planned with sales supported by core users, in addition to fair digital download sales.”

Unfortunately, Capcom doesn’t provide any data, so we don’t know what “largely as planned” and “fair digital dowload sales” mean concretely. One thing’s for sure: that statement is pretty interesting! After all, it’s taken a few weeks for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice total sales to reach those of its predecessor… during its launch week.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice sales not only dropped significantly compared to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, they did so with a (much) bigger marketing push, an anime series, and more. It seems rather surprising that Capcom would say that sales are “largely as planned”.

Capcom – Million-sellers

As of June 2016, the company has 75 million-sellers, including:

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: 4.1 million units
  • Monster Hunter 4: 4.1 million units
  • Monster Hunter X: 3.3 million units
  • Ducktales Remastered: 1 million units

Capcom – Franchise sales

Here’s how many units the various franchises have sold:

  • Monster Hunter: 37 million units (33 titles)
  • Ace Attorney: 6.1 million units (22 titles)
