Yo-kai Watch: over 10 million units sold in Japan, 581 000 units for Yo-kai Watch 3

Last week, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura came out in Japan, and as usual, we’re getting the usual pre-Media Create/Famitsu data press release from Level-5. But this time around, we get data not just for the latest game, but also the series as a whole!

Level-5 announced that during the first two days, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura sold about 581 000 units at retail. As comparison, here’s how the previous Yo-kai Watch games sold at launch (Famitsu data, courtesy of Game Data Library):

  • Yo-kai Watch (2013): 52 901 units
  • Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke (2014): 1 281 096 units
  • Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi (2014): 1 211 918 units
  • Yo-kai Watch Busters (2015): 688 386
  • Yo-kai Sangokushi (2016): 263 637

We can see that Yo-kai Watch had a worse opening week-end that all previous games (with the exception of the original one, and Yo-kai Sangokushi). This is most certainly a disappointing debut, which shows that the Yo-kai Watch craze has finally calmed down a bit.

That being said, there’s nothing really alarming about those numbers (for now, at least), as Yo-kai Watch 3 is bound to enjoy strong sales during the Summer holidays (which start today), and throughout the year until the end of holiday period.

And unlike Yo-kai Watch 2, it doesn’t look like Yo-kai Watch 3 is getting a third version (but instead major updates, Ver. 2.0 and Ver. 3.0), so such a version should not come and cut into the sales of the first two.

In its press release, Level-5 also gives data about the Yo-kai Watch series as a whole, and reveals that a total of 10,438,903 units have been sold from July 11th, 2013 (release date of the first Yo-kai Watch game) to July 17th, 2016. That’s an average of over 3 million units per year.

NB: the data is only for the physical version of the game, as digital sales are not counted. It covers all games released since July 11th, including Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version on Wii U.

In total, 7 Yo-kai Watch games have been released since 2013, and the best-seller is Yo-kai Watch 2 (the original versions) with 3,178,000 units sold in total. They account for almost 1/3 of total sales for the series on their own!
