The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup: Nintendo Switch version announced, Wii U version cancelled

In the past few weeks, Gory Detail has shared quite a lot of screenshots and animated GIF for The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup. This puzzle platformer was originally supposed to release on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, but the Wii U logo was nowhere to be seen in the development video uploaded in June. This led many fans to believe the Wii U version was cancelled, and it turns out they were spot on.

In a statement sent to Nintendo Life, Chris Seaver confirmed that everything related to the Wii U had been put on the back-burner for a while, since they could not justify the development costs for what was already considered a dead system. Therefore, it’s not really surprising that this version would end up cancelled. As for the Nintendo 3DS version, it will depend on factors such as resources and time, but for now, it’s still ok.

As for the Nintendo Switch, Chris Seaver is quite optimistic about it, and thinks the console is great for them:

• it’s a “nice new platform to take advantage of early on in its cycle” (lots of buzz, not much competition);
• he thinks the console itself is a “brilliant little device”;
• The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup is a great fit for Nintendo’s demographic (it’s a puzzle-platformer after all), which explains why they confirmed it would be released on it.

Unfortunately, Gory Detail still doesn’t have a devkit, and they don’t really know when they will eventually receive one. One thing for sure: they’re quite looking forward to tinkering with Nintendo’s new home console.

Development-wise, the team is focusing on the PC version at the moment, that they hope will be done by September. For the Nintendo Switch version, it will all depend on when they do get those elusive devkits. As for the price, Chris Seaver expect The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup to cost around £12-15 (14.99€-$/19.99€-$).
