The Snack World: Trejarers releasing on July 13th in Japan; plenty of details and pics, more

Originally announced during the Level-5 Vision 2015 event, The Snack World is Level-5’s latest cross-media project. The manga debuted in CoroCoro magazine in December, the anime series debuted on TV Tokyo yesterday (April 13th), and now we’re waiting for the Nintendo 3DS game.

During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, it was announced that The Snack World would be released on Nintendo 3DS on July 13th (taking the usual spot reserved to the latest Yo-kai Watch game). The Nintendo 3DS game will be known as The Snack World: TreJarers, with TreJarers standing for Treasure + Jara (the weapons/toys).

Here’s the segment from the Nintendo Direct presentation, along with a TV commercial:

The Snack World: TreJarers – Overview

The official website was updated following the Nintendo Direct presentation, and reveals that the game will follow a different story than the anime series.

What’s more, you get to play not as Chap (the protagonist of that series), but instead of your very own, customisable avatar (just like in Fantasy Life, and many other games). You’re free to combine the various parts (eyes, eyebrows, hair, etc.), as seen on the picture below. But don’t worry about Chap and his friends: they do appear in the game!

Next, a few words about the Jaras and the Snacks: if you scan them via the NFC reader of the Nintendo 3DS, something good will happen. But wait, you’re probably wondering what those two things are…

  • Jaras: miniature weapon toys, that you scan tap in order to make the in-game equivalent spawn in-game;
  • Snack: plates with monsters/characters sealed inside, that appear in-game with a special animation.

The Snack World: TreJarers – Game Introduction

In The Snack World: TreJarers, you alternate between two phases: those you spend at your Base, and those where you go explore Dungeons. Here’s what you do during each one:

  • Base: you prepare yourself before heading to a dungeon. Make sure you have the right equipment, and all the items you need!
  • Dungeons: explore those in order to find the treasure that lies deep inside.

When in battle, the Jara (weapon) you choose is pretty important, so you really need to think carefully before picking one. After all, just like in many other games, certain enemies are weak against certain weapons, and are strong against others. In other words, you have to pick the right Jara for the right enemies!.

About the dungeon, the website reveals that they’re generaly randomly, though there’s always some sweet treasure to be found deep inside… protected by a big bad boss, obviously! Here’s some examples of dungeons:

  • a Canyon
  • a mysterious Forest
  • a Creepy Temple

We also get to see one of the bosses: a giant Kraken, that can be found… in the desert. It even has palm trees on its head!

Another dungeon to be found in the game is the Heavy Temple, guarded by a terrible boss: Medusa. Rumours has it she has managed to defeat even some elite troops, by turning them into stone with her piercing glare. The screenshow below show the team fighting a bunch of slimes, finding a suspicious door, and more.

Next, here’s some of the creatures you will find during your adventures:

  • Buttari (a pun on “buta” -pig in Japanese- and battery). A monster with a power outlet on its nose, and a plug at the tip of its tail (which is well rounded, so that babies cannot hurt themselves when playing);
  • Scopion (a pun on scope and scorpion). A scorpion wearing binoculars, that allows him to see things located far away. It also has a bag with some test tubes inside, and what seems to be a grapling-hook-like device on its tail;
  • Yeti. A seemingly weak but incredibly cute monster, who is apparently more deadly than it looks: it seems it can spit sub-zero blizzard to freeze its enemies!
  • Mermaid. The self-proclaimed “Idol of the Seas”. She can release powerful water attack from her microphone;
  • Penguin Knight
  • Mimic
  • Merman
  • Kurone (a pun on “kuro” -black in Japanese- and clone)

The Snack World: TreJarers – Snacks and Jaras

Snacks and Jaras are two key items from the world of The Snack World, and both will be released as NFC toys:

  • Jaras: miniature weapon toys, that you scan tap in order to make the in-game equivalent spawn in-game. You can carry up to 6 of them, and you’re free to choose which ones;
  • Snack: plates with monsters/characters sealed inside, that also appear in the anime series. If you scan them in-game, you can summon the monster or the character on the plate.

As mentioned above, the Jaras and Snacks toys are equipped with a NFC chip, and scanning them allows you to get various goodies in-game. For example, by scanning a Jara, you can unlock a special quest. Completing that quest allows you to get a special item, that can power-up one of your weapons. By scanning a Snack, you can unlock a special quest involving Butako, in order to get Chap’s bandana.

The website clarifies that items that appear in-game vary depending on the toy scanned, which means they are not randomised. If you want a specific item, you will need to get a specific toy!

There’s various brands, each with their own specificities:

  • Britannia Enchant: pretty high-class

  • Peffany: a girly brand

  • Clanarine: for classy (and wealthy) adventurers

  • Fairy Electronics: for fans of high-tech equipment

Naturally, you’re free to combine Jaras from various brands: you’re not restricted to a specific one, for example.

The Snack World: TreJarers – Toys and accessories

To use the toys with The Snack World: TreJarers, you can use either:

  • a new Nintendo 3DS (XL)
  • Nintendo’s own NFC adapter
  • the LEVEL 5 Portable Reader Writer (sold 3 500 Yen + taxes)

The toys will be sold in various forms, including as part of the Tre Jara Box (that includes a random selection of Jaras and Snacks). The first-print copies of the game will also come with a toy. It looks like the first series of toys will have 22 different Jaras and Snacks (combined).

Fun fact: the Jaras can be worn as actual accessories (in real life, not in-game!): there’s a hole on them, that you can use to put them on a keyring, for example. Some official keyrings, like those worn by the characters in the anime series, will also be released (1 500 Yen + taxes, can hold up to 6 Jaras).

Another toy that will be released: the Fairypon, a portable device that the characters are using in the anime series. They can be used to:

  • play sounds (when you scan a Jara/Snack, it plays the music theme of the brand of the Jara/attribute of the character/monster scanned, and it says the name of the weapon/monster/character)
  • an actual mini-game, using the Jara and Snacks. You can then battle the monster on the Snack. The result of the battle is actually written on the Snack’s NFC chip, but it’s not clear what this is used for.

There’s two models of Fairypon: a pink one for Mayonne, and a blue or for Chap. They both come with an exclusive Jara and Snack (Butako with pendant + Clear Pink Panther for the former, and Butako + Clear Crystal Sword for the second).

Finally, here’s pictures of those toys:

The Snack World: TreJarers (3DS) will be released on July 20th in Japan. Level-5 has confirmed they intended to launch the franchise outside Japan, but nothing has been announced so far. The Upcoming Releases page has been updated!
