Super Smash Bros.: Masahiro Sakurai shares details on the creation of the game, never-before-seen footage of prototype

Earlier this year, Masahiro Sakurai launched his own YouTube channel: Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games. Several times a week, he uploads a new video in which he shares some insightful advice about game development, as well as juicy details about the development of the game he’s worked on over the years. The latest video, uploaded today, is about the original Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo 64!

Here’s the video:

This video goes over the creation of what eventually grew into one of Nintendo’s most successful series, and even features never-before-seen footage of the prototype that eventually evolved into Super Smash Bros. (which was called Dragon King: The Fighting Game). Quite interestingly, the game did not feature any Nintendo characters at the time!

In the video, Masahiro Sakurai also explains how he designed Super Smash Bros. as an “anti-thesis” of fighting games, from a gameplay perspective, but also regarding the characters it featured. It’s definitely well worth watching, especially if you’re a fan of the series!
