Splatoon: details, screenshots and artworks for the August 6th update

Splatoon update 1

Nintendo announced it this morning: Splatoon will get its first major update on August 6th, with quite a bit of new content to be added… and even more to come! Here’s the rundown of all additions/changes coming to Splatoon:

New matchmaking modes

The August 6th update for Splatoon will add two new matchmaking modes:

– Squad Battle: you can participate in Ranked Battle matches with other squads, chosen at random. Once the squad has been created, you can invite up to 3 friends. With this new matchmaking mode, you will be able to play with your friends at all times, since the teams won’t be shuffled at the end of a match.
– Private Battle: a mode where you can set up your own private and customisable battles. From 2 to 8 friends can play together in this mode, where you get to chose your favorite maps, modes and weapons. You can have matches in 1vs1, 2vs2,  3vs3 or 4vs4, but you can also chose to have two teams with a different number of players (such as 1vs4, for example).

NB: according to Nintendo, it also allows for “small-scale custom tournaments using up to 8 Wii U consoles and games on a single Internet connection”.

New level caps

The developers were quite surprised to see players reaching Level-20 in Splatoon so quickly, so for this major update, they decided to raise the level cap significantly. It will now be:

– Level 50 for regular online battles;
– S+ for Ranked battles.

New weapon and gear, new modes

With this major update, the developers are adding two types of weapons:

– the Slosher (which looks like a bucket): allows you to throw ink straight ahead at a rather impressive range, but also above yourself (so that you can hit players above you, or even behind walls).
– Splatling (which looks like a gatling gun): you can charge ink and then fire it at maximum power.

In total, over 40 new pieces of gear will be added to the game, and they range from leather jacket to a sushi-chef costume. Obviously, the developers will keep on adding new stuff to the game in Summer and Autumn, including the Rainmaker mode.
