Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: latest details (Mantine Surf, Island Trials, more), trailers

Today, The Pokémon Company revealed the latest batch of details for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, but also the latest two trailers for the game.

Let’s start with those two trailers:

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon – Pokémon

In this game, you will meet lots of different Pokémon, including some that were not found in Pokémon Sun and Moon. In total over 400 Pokémon can be found in this new version of the Alola region. Of course, the Alolan variants are back, though it doesn’t look like there are new ones this time around.

And of course, there are once again version-exclusive Pokémon, such as:

  • Houndoom (Pokémon Ultra Sun)
  • Manectric (Pokémon Ultra Moon)
  • Alolan Vulpix (Pokémon Ultra Sun)
  • Alolan Sandhrew (Pokémon Ultra Moon)

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon – Alola region

Remember the Island Challenge from Pokémon Sun and Moon? Well, it’s back in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, though they have been modified. For example, some of the trials play out in different ways than they did in Pokémon Sun and Moon, which is good news for those of you who already played that game.

Of course, the key aspects of those challenges remain the same: they’re still hosted by the Captains found on each island, and their contents can vary (some will have you fight Pokémon, other solve some puzzles, etc.). They all end the same way: in a battle against Totem Pokémon, which are significantly stronger (and larger) than their regular counterpart. Marowak is a Totem Pokémon this time around.

Once you’ve cleared the challenge of all captains of an island, you have to face the island’s Kahuna during the Grand Trial.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon has a new trial, with Mina, though we don’t know much about it at the moment.

Next, here’s some of the key characters you will get to meet during your adventure:

  • Hau

Hau is a boy who becomes your friend as soon as you move to Alola. He’s the same age as you. Hau is known to be a laid-back guy, but through the island challenge, he will come to terms with his reasons for participating in Pokémon battles.

  • Lillie

Lillie is a girl about your age. She’s acting as Professor Kukui’s assistant for her own reasons. After experiencing many things during her adventures with you, Lillie will discover a new side of herself.

Throughout your adventure, you will be confronted with troubles involving Necrozma, the Legendary Pokémon that can fuse with Lunala and Solgaleo. You will also meet new, mysterious people and Pokémon, and face a danger that is closing in on the Alola region.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon – Cool features

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon features a brand new activity called Mantine Surfing. And it’s exacly what the name implies: you ride a Mantine, and go surfing! This Pokémon allows you to move from island to island , but also surf in order to get the highest score possible by pulling off various moves.

Mantine Surfing being in the game also confirms that Ride Pokémon are back in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon… not that there was any way they wouldn’t! Just like in Pokémon Sun and Moon, you can only use them once you get the Ride Pager, and they’re “unlocked” as you progress through the game.

The Pokémon Company also shared some additional details about the Alola Photo Club, that we previously covered in this post. But there’s one aspect that wasn’t mentioned until today: taking a photo with a Pokémon allows you to deepen your bond with it, and they become more affectionate toward you. Just like in Pokémon Sun and Moon (and X / Y), the more affectionate a Pokémon, the better they become in battle.

Finally, The Pokémon Company confirms the inevitable: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will be compatible with the Pokémon Global Link, and so from launch day (November 17th).

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (3DS) comes out on November 17th worldwide.
