Pokémon GO getting AR+ mode on iOS 11 devices

Earlier today, the iOS version of Pokémon GO received an update (Ver. 1.57.5). Since the patch notes only mentioned bug fixes, and the update itself is only available on devices running iOS, we naturally assumed it was only about… well… bug fixes.

But it turns out this update adds a major new feature (or rather, improvement) to Pokémon GO: AR+ mode. Since it leverages Apple’s ARKit framework, it’s no wonder the update is only on iDevices (and more precisely those running iOS 11, from the iPhone 6s onwards).

But what is AR+, exactly? According to Niantic, it allows for even more “realistic” Pokémon encounters. With AR+, Pokémon are now fixed to a point in space, which means you can actually walk up close to them. This is pretty important for large or tall Pokémon, such as Onix or Snorlax.

Of course, that’s not all AR+ is about. Pokémon are now aware of the player, and will run away if they become aware of you getting close. You can actually sneak up close in order to earn an Expert Handler bonus, but be careful to avoid scaring the Pokémon away.

Fortunately, there’s now an awareness meter to help you: if it fills up completely, the Pokémon will flee. And if that happens, try tapping the tall grass nearby to make it reappear. It doesn’t seem to work all the time, though, so be careful when getting close to a Pokémon.

About the Expert Handler Bonus mentioned above, it triggers you catch a Pokémon while in close proximity, and nets you more XP and Stardust. But that’s not all: you also get a better chance at earning Great and Excellent Throw bonuses when you’re up close to a Pokémon!

Finally, here’s some pictures of the AR+ mode in Pokémon GO:
