Nintendo World Championships 2015: Trophy revealed, interview of the producer

A few minutes ago, Game Informer put online an interview of Erik Peterson (from Nintendo’s Treehouse), who happens to be the producer of the Nintendo World Champions 2015. He was a kid when the original tournament took place, back in 1990, so as you can imagine, he’s pretty excited to be able to bring it back.

The Nintendo World Championships 2015 is a pretty big deal for Nintendo, who was quite impressed by the reception of the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament last year. They wanted to bring it to the next level this year, which is why they brought back the Nintendo World Championships.

If you thought the tournament would only be based on Ultimate NES Remix, there’s nothing to worry about: it was only used for the qualifiers (as a nod the original Nintendo World Championships, with the special mode in the game). There will be a total of 8 games, including The Legend of Zelda (NES) and even Splatoon.

Erik Peterson also talked about the invited competitors, who were chosen very carefully, and they spent a lot of time searching for them. Apparently, Nintendo is “always watching videos and livestreams and looking for great Nintendo players and fans”, and the selection process wasn’t all that easy.

For Nintendo, the most important aspect of the Nintendo World Championships is to have as much fun as possible with fans. It’s one of the new ways to connect with them, along with the Nintendo Digital Event.

But will the Nintendo World Championships 2015 end up with the last challenge being on a new game (like in the movie “The Wizard”)? The answer is… more or less no. Erik Perterson explains that they are keeping some of the games secret for two reasons: in order to provide an additional challenge for the competitors, and to make the show as fun as possible.

Finally, here’s a look at the trophy the winner of the Nintendo World Championships 2015 will receive:

As you can imagine, this is a one of a kind trophy!
