Media Create: more sales data for Week 1 (2016) in Japan

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 1, 2016.

During Week 1, a total of 586 000 games were sold in Japan: a significant drop compared to Week 53 (the ratio is 51.91%). Of course, this comes as no surprise now that the holiday period and New Year are behind us, and without any releases. That being said, 2016 starts better than 2015 did, as sales equal 114.88% of 2015 sales.

Hardware-wise, over 156 000 consoles were sold in Japan, according to Media Create. Just like for Software, sales are significantly down compared to Week 53 (the ratio is 50.62%), but they’re up compared to the same week in 2015. Sales in 2016 equal 131.57% of sales in 2015, which is mainly due to the Wii U, the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita.

Sales of Wii U basically doubled compared to the same week in 2015 (they equal 228.84% of sales during Week 1 2015). Demand remains surprisingly strong now that the holiday period is over: it looks like Splatoon and Super Mario Maker still have some strength left in them!
