[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 37, 2021 (September 06 – September 12) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 37, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 37)

Week 37 was relatively busy for the video games market in Japan, with a fair number of new games in the Top 10 Software.

WarioWare is off to a great debut, with 72 277 units sold at retil alone during the first few days.

This is the best debut for the series since WarioWare: Touched! on Nintendo DS back in 2004… and that’s without taking digital sales into accounts! Those are bound to be fairly substantial, thanks to the game’s low price (and small file size). Depending on the sales trajectory during the rest of the year (and especially the holiday), this new entry could very well end up selling half a million units (if not more).

As for Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, it’s off to a disappointing debut with only 7 324 units sold. This is marginally better than YS VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, which opened with 6 817 units sold. But unlike Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, this was the first portable release for Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. It appeared that Nihon Falcom failed to grow the audience on Nintendo Switch, which is hardly surprising as late ports sold full price and withtout significant additions rarely do well.

Unfortunately, there’s no particular milestone this week. The usual evergreen titles fared quite well, though sales are slightly down compared to Week 36.

Famitsu – Hardware

Quite surprisingly, Nintendo Switch saw a slight increase this week with 67 114 units sold this week (up from 60 942 units last week). The increase comes exclusively from the OG model, which sold 56 177 units this week (compared to 49 854 units last week). Unfortunately, this week’s increase is not enough to compensate for the drop Year on Year, as the Nintendo Switch sold 83 920 units during the same week last year.

So far, it appears that the upcoming release of the OLED model hasn’t had a noticeable impact on Nintendo Switch sales (yet?). Pre-orders will kick off next week (on September 24th), which is when we might see people start holding off purchasing the current models to get the OLED model instead. But if the past few weeks and months are any indication, there should not be any massive drop in sales (unless Nintendo decide to limit shipments to make room for the new model).

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 3 778 286 units this year, which is barely 5 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (3 773 514 units). Next week, 2020 sales will catch up with 2021 sales (unless there’s a dramatic increase in sales for no particular reason). LTD sales now stand at 21 118 660 units, with 17 065 684 units for the OG model, and 4 052 976 units for the Lite model.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales went up again this week, with 789 units sold (up from 746 units last week, but down from 849 units last year). YTD sales now stand at 22 084 units (vs. 43 756 units in 2020), and YTD sales at 24 580 992 units.
