[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 29, 2021 (July 12 – July 18) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 29, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 29)

Week 29 saw the release of a few Nintendo Switch titles, including two that managed to sell over 100 000 units each.

The first one is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, which is off to a great start with 159 089 units sold at retail. This is better than The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening back in 2019 (about 141 000 units sold at launch, and over 300 000 units in total), but worse than the original version of the game on Wii (194 894 units at launch, 349 143 units in total).

That being said, there’s also digital sales to take into account, and the latest Nintendo eShop charts point towards a strong performance on the Nintendo eShop. It would appear this remaster managed to sell as well as the original, which is no small feat: remasters rarely manage to do so (even with full-blown remakes, it doesn’t happen all that often). The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD should have no trouble surpassing the total sales of the original on Wii.

Next: Crayon Shin-Chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi. It’s off to an impressive start with over 100 000 units sold (107 319 units to be precise). This is a massive over performance compared to the previous Shin-chan games by Neos, but also the best launch week sales ever for Crayon Shin-chan video games adaptations.

From its initial reveal during a Nintendo Direct presentation, this game has garnered quite a lot of interest thanks to its charming graphics and relaxing gameplay, but also the fact that the creator of the Boku no Natsuyasumi series was working on it. The series used to be quite popular during the heydays of the PlayStation in Japan, with nearly 600 000 units sold in total for the second entry on PS2.

It would appear that the developers managed to capture not only the essence of that series, but also its sales potential. It will be interesting to see how Crayon Shin-Chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi ends up selling throughout the Summer holiday season, but also the rest of the year. Next couple of weeks may see a big drop in sales, as it’s highly unlikely neither Neos nor retailers had expected such strong sales right off the bat.

Finally, Earth Defense Force 2 for Nintendo Switch is off to a decent start with 9 379 units. Late port rarely do well (especially when it’s already been ported on several platforms before), but it seems this one was able to beat the odds (especially as digital pre-order appear fairly solid). The low price is certainly helping, though!

Last week’s new releases saw a big drop in sales, with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin selling 32 111 units (-77%), and eBaseball Professional Baseball Spirits 2021: Grand Slam selling 20 711 units (-81%). The former is impacted by shortages, while the latter is headed towards a big drop compared to the previous entry, though it should have no trouble selling over 200 000 units at retail alone when all is said and done.

Due to Nintendo Switch sales dropping, all evergreen titles saw a slight drop in sales this week. That being said, sales remain quite strong!

This week, the Nintendo Switch saw another drop in sales with “only” 64 107 units sold (down from 69 283 units last week). It would appear that demand has finally settled down, with Nintendo finally able to ship enough units to fully satisfy it. That being said, sales remain unusually strong for a platform already in its 5th year on the market.

Week 29 was pretty big in 2020, with no less than 113 197 units sold. Because of the big drop Year on Year, the gap between 2021 and 2020 sales took a major hit this week. It’s now dropped below 300 000 units (with 3 219 341 units sold in 2021 so far, vs. 2 928 208 units last year). Even if sales do increase thanks to the Summer holiday season, it’s unlikely to reverse the trend (especially with a new model on the horizon).

It’s not clear what kind of impact the OLED model will have on sales, but so far, it does seem to have a visible (but still somewhat limited) impact. The Nintendo Switch is in a completely different situation this Summer (the line-up is strong, but nothing to compensate for the lack of one-per-generation megahit like Animal Crossing: New Horizons), making direct comparisons rather tricky.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 20 559 715 units since launch, with 3 959 196 units for the Lite model and 16 600 519 units for the OG model.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales dropped ot 584 units this week (down from 628 units last week, and 903 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 17 807 units (down from 35 977 units last year), and LTD sales to 24 576 715 units.
