[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 29, 2020 (July 13 – July 19) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 29, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 29)

Week 29 was another fairly busy week, with a couple of major releases shaking up the Top 10 Software. On Nintendo Switch, the biggest release is Paper Mario: The Origami King, which is off to a fairly decent start with 109 092 units sold during launch week.

It’s actually the second worst debut for a Paper Mario game in Japan (only Paper Mario: Color Splash did worse with about 50 000 units sold at launch, thanks to the poisonous Wii U), but that’s without taking into account digital sales. Said sales were negligible on Nintendo 3DS, and there was no digital version for older games, so it’s pretty safe to say Paper Mario: The Origami King’s opening is in line with previous entries in the series. We will know for sure in October, when Nintendo share data for Q2 2020-21.

The real test for Paper Mario: The Origami King will be long-term sales. Paper Mario: Sticker Star LTD sales ended up nearly 5 times higher than launch week sales (130 009 units at launch, 564 823 units LTD). Given the usual sales trajectory of most Nintendo Switch games from Nintendo, it should be able to do at least half as well, but we it’s too early to know whether Paper Mario: The Origami King is the next evergreen title in the making.

The other entry in the Top 10 is the retail release of Futari de! Nyanko Dai Senso. It’s off to an “ok” debut, with 9 725 units sold at launch. Long-term sales will be key for this game, which has already sold a fair amount on the Nintendo eShop (it was the 3rd most downloaded digital-only game in the first half of 2020, despite originally launching in December 2018!). At the very least, sales should be strong during the upcoming Summer holiday season.

Highlights this week include:

  • 03./04. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo) – 71.897 / 5.186.283 (+28%). Major boost in sales due to the increase in Nintendo Switch shipments (and especially the bundle including the game).

The usual evergreen titles sold as usual, with sales either slightly up or down (if not completely flat, like Pokémon Sword and Shield). eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 had a fairly decent second week, with about 56 000 units. Once again, the Nintendo Switch version was the most popular, with 29 719 units sold. LTD sales now stand at over 242 000 units, with 124 595 units for the Nintendo Switch version alone.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are still on the rise, with over 100 000 units sold (113 197 units to be precise), up from 96 789 units last week. But despite the continuous increases in shipments, it’s still impossible to buy the console without going through the lottery system at retailers. And the thing is, those lotteries are there to stay (probably until the end of the Summer holiday season); that’s how strong the demand for the Nintendo Switch is in Japan at the moment.

Year on Year, the increase is quite striking: the console sold “only” 45 596 units during the same week last year. Unless sales drop sharply during Week 30, the console will hit the 3 million units milestone in 2020 alone during that week, which is really impressive. YTD sales now stand at 2 929 208 units, as opposed to only 1 660 780 units sold by Week 29 2019. The gap just keeps on widening, and we will probably have to wait until September (and the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite in 2019) to see it decrease in a significant fashion.

The Nintendo Switch has now sold 14 312 639 units LTD, with 2 408 524 units for the Lite model, and 11 904 115 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did increase very slightly to 903 units (vs 801 during the previous week, and 2 517 units during Week 29 2019). YTD sales now stand at 35 977 units (vs. 137 783 units as of Week 29 2019), and LTD sales at 24 532 124 units.
