[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 24, 2021 (June 07 – June 13) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 24, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 24)

This week was a busier one for the video games market in Japan, with some fresh new blood in the Top 10 Software.

Quite interestingly, the best-selling new game was none other than Game Builder Garage with about 71 000 units sold. It looks like quite a lot of people were interested in learning how to make games (or play those created by other players!), though there’s little doubt the small price helped sales a great deal (it’s far cheaper than regular Nintendo Switch games, even those published by Nintendo).

In comparison, the first Nintendo Labo release (Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit) sold about 93 000 units at launch (and over 260 000 units LTD). It’s not clear if Game Builder Garage has any chance of outselling it, but we probably won’t have to wait long before finding out; the following few weeks will be quite telling regarding the mid and long-term sales potential. As mentioned above, the low price is a definitive plus, and it should help sales beyond first week.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version of Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection did not chart, which means it sold less than 9 802 units. It looks like this is a series where a significant portion of the fanbase is still on PlayStation consoles.

Due to so many new games entering the Top 10 Software this week, there’s less Nintendo Switch evergreen titles than usual this time around. Those that did manage to hold out enjoyed stable sales, with the exception of Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! which saw a slight drop in sales (-16%). Monster Hunter Rise also saw a big drop in sales (-39%).

No milestone this week, but Minecraft will finally reach 2 million units sold at retail next week (it’s currently sitting at 1 995 228 units sold).

This week, Nintendo Switch saw a slight drop in sales with about 78 000 units sold (down from 97 000 units the previous week). It’s certainly interesting to see that sales went down the week with a noteable release! And despite the drop, sales remain at an unusually high level, which bodes quite well for the upcoming Summer holiday season (even though comparisons with 2021 sales are going to get tougher and tougher moving forward).

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold 55 187 units last year during the same week, bringing the gap between 2021 and 2020 units sales to well over 350 000 units. With 2 853 429 units sold as of this week (vs. 2 494 655 units during the same period last year), YTD sales may well reach 3 million units even before the end of the first half of the year.

LTD sales now stand at 20 193 803 units, with 3 889 413 units sold for the Lite model, and 16 304 390 units sold for the OG model.

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS sold 395 units this week (up from 341 units last week, but down from 1 004 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 14 863 units (down from 31 244 units last year). LTD sales now stand at 24 573 771 units.
