[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 15, 2021 (April 05 – 11) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 15, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 15)

Week 15 was another quiet week for the video games market in Japan, with not a single release making it in the Top 10 Software.

Monster Hunter Rise had a great third week on the market with 194 327 units sold. The drop (-30%) is the best one for a Monster Hunter game on its 3rd week since Monster Hunter Freedom 3 all the way back in 2010. Such a performance is primarily due to Capcom finally keeping up with demand at retail; the worst of the shortages are now behind, and it’s now far easier to find the game in stores.

LTD sales now stand at 1 774 063 units at retail alone. The 2 million units milestone will be reached within the next couple of weeks.

Other highlights this week include:

  • 05./05. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) – 10.154 / 2.501.449 (-13%). It’s now sold over 2.5 million units, and should have no trouble hitting the 3 million units milestone by the end of the year;
  • 10./11. [NSW] Pokemon Sword / Shield (Pokemon Co.) – 4.634 / 4.023.912 (-5%). It recently passed the 4 million units milestone at retail alone, and that’s without counting the game + DLC bundled released last year.

Another week of soft drops for the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch, and we’ll have to wait until the end of the month to see sales increase significantly again.

This week, the Nintendo Switch saw another drop in sales with 96 259 units sold (down 135 076 units — not really all that surprising given the shortages currently impacting the OG model and the lack of notable releases. The OG model and the Lite model sold almost the same (48 733 units vs. 47 256 units), which is a sign that the former is supply constrained.

But while there may be shortages impacting one of the two models, Nintendo have (so far) been able to keep up with demand… unlike last year, when only 25 313 units were sold during the same week. While it’s pretty safe to expect that the end of the month (and especially the Golden Week) is when we will finally see substantial shipments for the OG model, it doesn’t look like sales are going to fall off a cliff like they did last year.

Since Nintendo have been able to keep up with demand this year, the gap between 2021 and 2020 is widening once again. So far, 1 976 309 units have been sold this year, as opposed to 1 880 305 units in 2020. The gap is about 100 000 units, and it will be interesting to see how big it will get in the next few weeks and months.

Next week, the Nintendo Switch will hit another milestone: 2 million units YTD… even faster than last year! So far, the console has sold 19 316 683 units since launch, with 3 637 401 units for the Lite model, and 15 679 282 units for the OG model.

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS sold 622 units this week (down from 752 units last week, and 1 614 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 10 742 units (down from 18 014 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 569 650 units.
