[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 13, 2021 (March 22 – March 28) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 13, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 13)

This week was a pretty big one for the Japanese video games market, what with the release of Monster Hunter Rise. It’s off to a surprisingly meak debut with “only” 1 302 132 units sold during launch week. There’s several factors to explain this performance:

  • Capcom and retailers underestimated demand, and ordered less copies than necessary. The high sell-through ratio (94%) indicates that the game was virtually sold out during launch weekend, and unfortunately, those shortages continued well into Week 14 (new shipment is expected for this weekend).
  • Digital is now accounting for an even bigger share of sales (far bigger than on Nintendo 3DS), and in fact, Capcom’s press release on Monday does point towards extremely strong digital sales.

The next few weeks will be quite telling regarding the long-term potential of the game. Monster Hunter Rise does have the potential to become the next evergreen title on Nintendo Switch, especially with regular DLC to keep players busy. It should have no trouble selling well over 2 million units at retail alone, and 3 million units should be possible too.

The second release of the week is Gotoubun no Hanayome ∬ ~ Natsu no Omoide mo Gotoubun ~, which is off to a surprisingly strong start with no less than 30 000 units sold on the two platforms it was released on (including 20 374 units on Nintendo Switch alone).

It’s fairly unusual for licenced games to sell that well (especially Visual Novels), so no doubt mages. are fairly happy about that performance. It’s not clear how much the game will end up selling in the long run, but it should at the very least be able to sell over 50 000 units at retail alone.

There’s no noteworthy milestone this week. The usual evergreen titles all enjoyed strong sales, and only Ring Fit Adventure saw a drop in sales (no doubt due to insufficient offer rather than lower demand).

As expected, the release of Monster Hunter Rise had a noticeable impact on Nintendo Switch sales. The console sold 267 497 units (up from 89 104 units the previous week), though it’s not clear how many units come from the bundle. One thing’s clear, though: quite a lot of people bought a Nintendo Switch just to play Monster Hunter Rise!

Both models saw a boost in sales thanks to Monster Hunter Rise, but the OG model saw a much bigger increase (in part due to the bundle): x4, with 190 133 units sold vs. “only” x2 for the Lite model with 77 364 units sold.

Nintendo Switch sales saw a big jump this week, but it wasn’t quite enough for the console to do better than last year during the same week (the week following the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons). During that week, 282 561 units were sold, following an already massive week for the console (392 576 units sold). That was just before massive shortages kicked in, so that’s an advantage 2021 sales will have over 2020 sales.

Over the past couple of weeks, the gap between 2021 and 2020 sales just melted like snow in the sun: it was over 300 000 units earlier this month, and it’s now down to only 44 000 units with 1 744 974 units for 2021 and 1 700 352 units for 2020.

Despite that, 2021 sales still ended up Year on Year, which is quite remarkable given Q1 2020 was quite strong for the Nintendo Switch. It’s too early to say how things will turn out for the rest of the year, but one thing we can say right now is that 2021 will be yet another strong year for the console.

This week, the Nintendo Switch hit its latest milestone with 19 085 348 units sold since launch. The Lite model accounts for 3 256 983 units, and the OG model for 15 558 365 units. The next milestone, 20 million units, could very well be reached by the end of Q2 2021 (the lack of shortages is definitely going to help).

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has outsold the PlayStation (18 854 258), and it won’t be long before it outsells the Nintendo Entertainment System (19 230 000 units).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 933 units this week (up from 814 units the precious week, and down from 940 units last year). YTD sales now stand at 9 368 units (vs. 15 170 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 568 276 units.
