Japan: more sales data for Week 34, July 2017; Monster Hunter XX, (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 34 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 34, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 433 000 units. Sales of already-released dropped to only 3/4 of their Week 33 levels, but in contrast, sales of new releases increased noticeably: 105.96% of Week 33 sales (+24 000 units).

The only major release this week was Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver., which sold 84 000 units during the first 3 days. Media Create reveals that only 48.95% of all units shipped for launch were effectively sold, which is a pretty poor result: it looks like retailers may have to resort to price drops to sell the remaining units, which would be quite the bad showing for a Monster Hunter game, so early.

Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. opened below Monster Hunter 3G HD, which sold 106 000 units during the opening days (69.82% sell-through ratio). What’s more, its initial performance is also worse when compared to the original version. Take a look at this comparison:

  • Monster Hunter XX (Nintendo 3DS): 848 000 units vs Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. (Nintendo Switch): 84 000 units (10% of the original version’s sales)
  • Monster Hunter 3G (Nintendo 3DS): 522 000 units vs Monster Hunter 3G HD (Wii U): 106 000 units (20% of the original version’s sales).

Media Create believes that the announcement of Monster Hunter World on PlayStation 4 had a negative impact on sales for Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver., with a certain number of players simply deciding to wait for that game instead. After all, why buy a brand new console for a mere port, when the next mainline entry isn’t even coming to it?

Day-1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day-1 sell-through ratio for a couple of new releases:

  • [3DS] Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 <RPG> (Atlus) (¥6.480) – 30%. A pretty poor debut, as the biggest cunk of sales generally take place on the first day, and this game is unlikely to sell in the long-run (RPG rarely do, and the first one didn’t);
  • [PS4] [PSV] [NSW] Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) – 30%. Another poor debut, and it’s not really surprising to see the Nintendo Switch version is the one that sold the least on launch day.

Week 34 (Dengeki)

For the first time in 4 weeks, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age wasn’t the best-selling game in Japan, thanks to one Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver.. It sold about 92 000 units at launch (about 8 000 units more than what was reported by Media Create), with a sell-through ratio of 55% (again, slightly better than Media Create’s data).

As for Splatoon 2, the additional 59 000 units sold this week allowed it to reach 1 million units… which means we now have the very first million-seller on Nintendo Switch!

Back to Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, it sold about 58 000 units this week (combined, with 35 000 units on Nintendo 3DS), and 2 984 000 units since launch (combined, with 1 681 000 units on Nintendo 3DS). Momentum seems to have subdued a bit, but next week, sales will finally top 3 million units since launch.

Hardware-wise, we have a massive increase in sales, thanks to the Nintendo Switch and its bigger shipments. Sales increased by 85.7%, to 81 000 units. Total sales since launch have now topped 1.5 million units, and in about half a year: a pretty good result so far, that would be even better if not for the endless shortages. Even when Nintendo manages to ship more units, it’s still nowhere near enough to meet demand.

For the period going from July 3rd to August 27th, both Hardware and Software sales are up significantly despite the period tracked being shorter by one week. Here’s the data:

  • Hardware: 1 310 000 units (+133.4%), with 500 000 units for the Nintendo Switch, and 440 000 units for the Nintendo 3DS (+86.2%);
  • Software: 6.7 million units (+50.9%), with 1.4 million units for the Nintendo Switch, and 2.78 million units for the Nintendo 3DS (+18.7%).
  • Overall: 77 billion Yen (+96.5%), the first time since 2010 that sales top 70 billion Yen during the Summer period!

Naturally, both increases are due to the strong games released during Summer, namely Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Splatoon 2.

July 2017 – Digital sales estimates (June 26th to July 30th)

In the latest issue, Famitsu magazine shares the latest digital sales estimates, for July 2017. We already discussed the sales for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Splatoon 2 in this post, but there were a lot of new releases this month, so there’s plenty to say!

Kirby’s Blowout Blast had a decent debut with 15 022 estimated sales. Since Kirby games tend to sell on the long run, even digital-only ones, this is a promising start (though nothing mindblowing).

As for Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, it had a rather mediocre debut digitally, with about 4 000 units sold, which is not surprising for a game mostly catering to a casual audience (less likely to buy games digitally without shortages).

Next, Hey! Pikmin and Ever Oasis had strikingly similar estimated sales, with about 2 000 units each: that’s pretty poor, but hardly surprising for Nintendo 3DS games… especially Ever Oasis, that completely flopped even at retail.

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star had a pretty low debut at retail, so it’s not surprising that digital sales would be low… not to mention this is a single player title, pretty likely to end in the used section of a video game stores as soon as the main story is done. And as you’re well aware, you can’t sell games bought digitally.

Finally, Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Dokonandesu? had a downright terrible debut digitally (only 308 units), but that’s because family-focused titles like this one rarely sell well digitally. After all, parents buying games for their kids are going to do so at a regular store, not on the Nintendo eShop.

Splatoon 2 (Media Create)

According to leaked Media Create data, the Splatoon 2 bundle accounts for 17% of total Nintendo Switch sales, and 25% of total Splatoon 2 sales.
