Japan: more sales data for Week 30, 2017, Dragon Quest XI (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 30 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 30, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 2 462 000 units, which is 249.53% of Week 29 sales. As you can imagine, this massive increase (+ 1 475 000 units compared to Week 29!) is due to Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which had an extremely positive impact on the sales of the console it was released on.

Sales of the Nintendo 3DS increased by 417.62%, while those of the PlayStation 4 increased by 302.34%. As a result, Hardware sales  as a whole are also significantly up, with 331 000 units sold (best week since the first week of March, according to Media Create).

Back to Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Media Create reports that it sold 2 090 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. To be more precise:

  • Nintendo 3DS: 1 149 000 units sold (sell-through ratio: 75.63%)
  • PlayStation 4: 950 000 units (sell-through ratio: 83.61%)

Media Create points out that despite such good sales, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age didn’t sell as much as Dragon Quest IX did back in July 2009 (2 319 000 units during the opening week-end), or Dragon Quest VIII in November 2004 (2 167 000 units during the opening week-end).

However, given the increase in the ratio of download sales in total Software sales, it’s safe to assume that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age sold on par with its predecessors.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day 1 sell-through for one, lone Nintendp 3DS game:

  •  [3DS] Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo (Capcom) – 30%. A really slow debut, which doesn’t bode well after how the first entry underperformed…

Week 30, 2017 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report similar sales for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, with 2 080 000 units sold for both versions:

  • Nintendo 3DS: 1 135 000 units
  • PlayStation 4: 946 000 units

Just like Media Create, Dengeki point out that this new entry didn’t sell as much as Dragon Quest IX, but if you take into account digital sales, then it’s a different story. They estimate that if the digital ratio is between 10 and 15%, then Dragon Quest XI sold between 2 310 000 and 2 450 000 units, which is on par or even better than Dragon Quest IX.

In just two days, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age became the best-selling game in July, and it most definitely will be the best-seller for the entire Summer season (if not the entire year, though Splatoon 2 could come and crash that party).

Dengeki also remind us that the opening week-end amount to 55.9% of total sales for Dragon Quest IX, and 65.1% of total sales for Dragon Quest VIII. If we apply a similiar ratio to Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, then it could end somewhere around 2.3 million units LTD for the Nintendo 3DS version, and 1.45 million units LTD for the PlayStation 4 one (3.48 million units combined).

It will be pretty interesting to see how Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age fares during the Summer period, arguably one of the most important of the year for family-friendly games like this one.

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2 sold 116 000 additional units during its second on the market, bringing the total to 762 000 units since launch. It’s another game Dengeki has set their eyes on.

Hardware-wise, Dengeki also report a massive increase in sales, which were multiplied by 3.1 for the Nintendo 3DS (whcih sold 149 000 units, including 115 000 units just for the Nintendo 2DS family).
