Japan: more sales data for Week 25, 2017, The Alliance Alive, May 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 25 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 25, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 295 000 units, which is 100.64% of Week 24 sales. Sales were basically flat, despite the many new releases this week. The problem is, only 3 of the 9 new releases sold over 10 000 units.

Total sales for new releases dropped by 10 000 compared to Week 24. And the comparison with 2016 isn’t in favour of 2017 either. Sales of new games during the same week only amount to 43.87% of Week 25 2016 sales, and that’s with one more game this year.

And as we expected, Media Create shared a few words about the Nintendo Switch, which finally reached 1 million units sold in Japan, 17 weeks after launch. They compare it with two other recent platforms, to see how long it took them to reach that milestone:

  • Nintendo Switch: 17 weeks
  • Wii U: 33 weeks
  • PlayStation 4: 46 weeks

Software-wise, the Nintendo is also doing much better than the other two platforms:

  • Nintendo Switch: 1 724 000 units
  • Wii U: 1 634 000 units
  • PlayStation 4: 2 500 000 units

Now, you’re probably wondering “Wait, that’s not right, the PlayStation 4 sold more games!”… and that’s true. But Media Create’s comparison is based on the amount of games sold by the time each console reached the 1 million units milestone for Hardware, and the Nintendo Switch reached it much earlier than the Wii U and the PlayStation 4.

To the surprise of no one, Media Create expect that Software sales will grow even further in the upcoming weeks and months (all the way through the end of the year), with the release of key titles such as Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey.

Week 25 (Dengeki)

Dengeki reports that ARMS sold about 32 000 units during its second week on the market, and was the best-selling game for the second week in a row. It’s now sold over 137 000 units since launch, a pretty satisfying performance so far.

The Alliance Alive isn’t that far behind, with 31 000 units for launch week, and a rather good sell-through ratio: 70%. Dengeki points out that this ratio varies significantly from to store, but overall, it’s a pretty “smooth” debut.

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it sold 12 000 units this week (589 000 units since launch), while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has to do with “only” 6 000 units sold (496 000 units since launch).

Dengeki then takes a look at the launch sales of new IP so far in 2017:

  • [Switch] ARMS: 105 000 units
  • [Switch] 1-2-Switch: 91 000 units
  • [PlayStation 4 / PlayStation Vita] Blue Reflect: 50 000 units

As for Software sales for the current Fiscal Year, things are not looking good. Sales are down by a wide margin: -29.7% this year (4 190 000 units). However, Dengeki points out that the line-up for July and August is pretty strong this year, with the following titles:

  • Dragon Quest XI Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete, on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 (following Dragon Quest IX and its +4 million units sold)
  • Splatoon 2 on Nintendo Switch (following Splatoon, and its +1.5 million units sold)
  • Gundam Versus on PlayStation 4 (previous entry: +390 000 units)
  • New Minna no Golf on PlayStation 4 (previous entry: +300 000 units)
  • Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy on Nintendo 3DS (previous entry: +280 000 units)
  • Hey! Pikmin on Nintendo 3DS (previous entry: 280 000 units)

That’s quite a lot of games that have the potential to sell over 300 000 units, which should hopefully push forward the market as a whole.

May 2017 (May 1st to May 28th) – Digital estimates (Famitsu)

Unsurprisingly, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition was the best-selling game digitally, with almost 60 000 units sold. It’s less than Minecraft: Wii U Edition during its launch month, but that was in December 2015, and the Wii U install base was much larger than the Nintendo Switch’s at the moment.

On the other hand, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers didn’t do too hot, with only 1 682 units sold. Same for Attack on Titan: Shichi Kara no Dasshutsu, that did even worse with 1 394 units sold.

The data below shows that Nintendo Switch games are doing quite well on the Nintendo eShop so far, especially Snipperclips: Cut it out, together!, with over 110 000 units sold to date.
