Japan: more sales data for Week 15, 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 15, 2017 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published its weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 15, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 277 000 units, which is 75.78% of Week 14 sales. They note that it’s the first time since the second week of September 2016 that sales dropped below 300 000 units.

New games didn’t really fare well: none of this week’s entries managed to sell at least 5 000 units, which is already a pretty low bar. Total sales for new games this week only amount to 83.30% of last week’s sales (even less than last week). As for previously released games, they sold 75.46% of Week 14 sales.

They also note that Monster Hunter XX topped sales for the 5th week in a row, with 1 366 000 units sold since launch. But as mentioned before, the drop from Monster Hunter Generations is quite visible: that game had already sold over 2 392 000 units by its 5th week. Even Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate did better (2 105 000 units), which already was lower than Monster Hunter 4 (2 653 000 units).

So far, Monster Hunter XX is selling between 700 000 to 1.3 million less than its predecessor, which is rather disappointing (though not really worrying, unless the next entry also suffers from similarly “low” sales).

Week 15, 2017, Fiscal Year 2016 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report a drop in sales for the market as a whole:

  • Hardware: 93 000 units (-9%)
  • Software: 265 000 units (-26.3%)

Monster Hunter XX also topped sales for the 5th week in a row for Dengeki, who report 380 000 units sold this week, and 1.47 million since launch (with 1.5 million units to be reached next week).

Dengeki also take a look at the gap between the best-selling games and the worst-selling ones in. They note that the gap had been widening in the past couple of years (what with the rise and dominance of Free 2 Start games on smart devices), and Fiscal Year 2016 (April 1st 2016 to March 31st 2017) saw a further widening of that gap.

In 2016, there were only 4 million-sellers (same as in 2015), and 5 games sold between 500 000 units and 1 million units (1 more than last year). On the other hand, the number of games that sold between 30 000 and 50 000 units dropped from 73 to 43. Meanwhile, more games than ever sold less than 30 000 units: 333 (66% of all games released, 309 last year).

Also, the number of games selling less than 10 000 units has been steadily growing: 87 in 2014, 114 in 2015, and 149 in 2016. In fact, 30% of all games released in 2016 did not sell more than 10 000 units.

Dengeki hopes that the release of major Nintendo Switch titles (such as Splatoon on July 21st) and Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete (on July 29th) will revitalise the market.
