Japan: more sales data for Week 6 2019, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 6)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 358 000 units, which is 69.89%% of Week 5 sales. Not only was there only 4 new releases, but those all sold low amounts (barely 7 000 units combined), and it clearly was nowhere enough to compensate for the drop in sales for games already released (- 102 000 units).

As such, it’s no wonder Software sales are down for the second week in a row, and that the top of the charts are monopolised by previously released games. Among those, we have New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 38 000 units sold: it outsold Kingdom Hearts III by a small margin (roughly 3 000 units), and it’s back at the very top for the first time since launch week.

For Media Create, this is a pretty classic example of a Nintendo evergreen title: they always stay at the top of the charts after their release. And here, we can clearly see the popularity of the Mario series, which is pretty constant.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 7)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for just one Nintendo Switch game:

  • [NSW] Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi with Power-Up Kit (Koei Tecmo) – 40%. Average debut: not bad, but nothing mindblowing either. PlayStation 4 sold more, and with better sell-through (60%), but that was expected.

Dengeki (Week 6)

Dengeki report that New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe sold 35 000 additional units (over 414 000 units LTD), but isn’t the best-selling game in Japan (they report slightly higher sales for Kingdom Hearts III than Media Create). As for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it sold 28 000 units this week, bringing total sales to 2.89 million units.

This week was a pretty uneventful week for the Japanese market, with both Software and Hardware sales down:

  • Hardware: 83 000 units (-11.8%)
  • Software: 326 000 units (-31.2%)

Next, we get some data for the current Fiscal Year, as of January (so April to January). So far, the market is down by a significant margin:

  • Hardware: 5.14 million units (-17.7%) / 154.1 billion Yen (-11.2%)
  • Software: 23.16 million units (-16.9%) / 150.7 billion Yen (-13.1%)
  • Total: 347 billion Yen to 304.8 billion Yen (-12.2%)

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch is the only one that saw its sales increase with 3.39 million units sold (+10.9%). All the other platforms are down:

  • PlayStation 4: 1.25 million units (-23.1%)
  • PlayStation Vita: 110 000 units (-50.6%)
  • Nintendo 3DS: 390 000 units (-70.9%).

Software-wise, things are not any different, except the increase is a lot more impressive for the Nintendo Switch. With 12.6 million units sold (+63.5%), Software sales for Nintendo’s console are a sight to behold. Meanwhile, all the other platforms saw their drop/plummet:

  • PlayStation 4: 7.79 million units (-13.8%)
  • PlayStation Vita: 720 000 units (-44.2%)
  • Nintendo 3DS: 1 970 000 units (-79%)

Looking at market shares, we can clearly see the rise of the Nintendo Switch… and the drop of all the platforms without “Switch” in their name. Its market share went from 39.9% during the same period last year to 59% during the current Fiscal Year. In other words, the Nintendo Switch accounts for almost 2/3 of total sales in the Japanese market.

The PlayStation 4 saw its market share drop from 35.7% to 33.1%, but it’s the Nintendo 3DS that saw the worst drop with a 5.2% market share (as opposed to 20.3% during the previous Fiscal Year). Finally, the PlayStation Vita is dead last with 2.4% market share.

The market now mainly consists of only two platforms: the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4, and it’s not going to change any time soon (though the market share of the former is only going to increase moving forward).
