Japan: more sales data for Week 45 2019, Nintendo Switch (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 46)

Unfortunately, no Day 1 sell-tthrough data this week!

Dengeki (Week 45)

Dengeki report that the Fortnite Darkfire Bundle sold about 7 000 units at launch, with the vast majority of sales on Nintendo Switch (5 862 units to be precise). It’s not clear why the Nintendo Switch version was so much more popular than the PlayStation 4 version, but this is most likely due to the fact this bundle is primarily aimed at parents buying it for their kids, as the game is already available for free on the Nintendo eShop (and the family audience is much bigger on Nintendo Switch).

As for Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko – Game de Asobou! Ehon no Sekai, it’s off to an unsurprising debut with nearly 4 000 units sold. The game should enjoy steady sales during the holiday season.

Next: Luigi’s Mansion 3. It sold 58 000 units this week, bringing total sales to 220 000 units. It’s still lagging behind Ring Fit Adventure, which sold 57 000 additional units, bringing total sales to 238 000 units.

Other entries this week include:

  • The Grisaia Trilogy (Entergram): 1 407 units. Once again, an unsurprising result for a late port of Visual Novels.

This week, the Nintendo Switch hit yet another milestone: it has now sold over 10 million units in Japan, 2 years and 8 months (141 weeks to be exact) after launch. Unsurprisingly, it’s nowhere near as good as the Nintendo DS that did it in 88 weeks (1 year and 7 months), but it’s also quite better than the Wii (169 weeks, so about 3 years and 2 months).

With Pokémon Sword and Shield now available, the holiday season is about to kick off in earnest, and naturally Dengeki expect sales to increase for the market as a whole. The question is how much the game will be able to sell, and what kind of impact it will have on Nintendo Switch.

Last year, the Nintendo Switch and two key games sold that many units between November and the first week of January:

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 2.67 million units
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!: 1.33 million units
  • Nintendo Switch: 1.86 million units (Hardware) / 6.74 million units (Software)
