Japan: more sales data for Week 44 2018, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Neko Tomo

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 44)

On Monday, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 276 000 units, which is 65.88% of Week 43 sales. It’s the first time in 4 months (since the first week of July) that sales dropped below the 300 000 units/week threshold.

The main reason the sales drop is so noticeable? It’s because sales of new games literally plummeted to about 4 000 units. There was only one new release in the Top 50, Neko Tomo, which sold… about 4 000 units. In comparison, previously released games saw their sales increase to 272 000 units (109.93% of Week 43 sales), but it was nowhere near enough to compensate for the complete lack of new releases, which really hurt sales.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 45)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a Nintendo 3DS game and a Nintendo Switch game:

  • [3DS] Luigi’s Mansion (Nintendo) (¥4.980) – 20%. Low sell-through, but sales should improve during the weekend;
  • [NSW] Pikachin-Kit: Game de Pirameki Daisakusen! (FuRyu) – less than 10%. A downright terrible performance, seemingly even worse than your average FuRyu licenced game… Either that or retailers ordered more copies than usual, which is quite unlikely.

Dengeki (Week 44, Fiscal Year)

This week, Dengeki report that Neko Tomo on Nintendo Switch sold about 4 000 units at launch (more or less the same as Media Create). As for Super Mario Party, it sold 29 000 additional units, bringing the total since launch to 304 000 units.

This time, we get some more data for the current Fiscal Year, with the market share of the two main platform holders. So far, Nintendo is dominating with 56.4% of total sales (Nintendo Switch: 49.2%, Nintendo 3DS: 7.2%), leaving Sony with 43.3% (PlayStation 4: 38.8%, PlayStation Vita: 4.5%).

But that’s only for the Fiscal Year as a whole. When you look at monthly trends, the market leader is not always the same. Nintendo dominated sales from April to August, especially starting in July with the Summer season. In July, its market share was 68.7%, and in August, it was 65.3%.

However, it’s a different story in September and October, thanks to hits from oversea publishers (such as Call of Duty Black Ops IIII): its market share was 53% and 50.9% in September and October respectively.

Of course, this is highly unlikely to have an impact on the full Fiscal Year, since Nintendo has some pretty heavy-hitters lined-up: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!, and Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. Granted, Sony platforms do have big titles lined-up (such as the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts III), but Dengeki do not expect much change in the market now dominated by stationary consoles.

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:
