Japan: more sales data for Week 45 2018, Luigi’s Mansion, Nintendo 3DS (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 45)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 259 000 units, which is 93.61% of Week 44 sales. Sales already dropped last week, but they dropped even further with 18 000 units less than during Week 44.

There was only one “major” release: Luigi’s mansion, which sold only 27 000 units. In comparison, Luigi’s Mansion 2 sold about 280 000 units at launch, which means the remake of the first game sold more than ten times less than its predecessor. This is a pretty poor performance, even for a remake.

Hardware-wise, sales are slightly up this week with 79 000 units sold, which is 113.07% of Week 44 sales. The increase is pretty much exclusively due to Nintendo consoles, and more precisely the Nintendo Switch. Sales did drop below 40 000 units in October, but it’s the third week in a row with an increase, as the holiday season and the big hitters are is drawing nearer.

Week 46 will have the release of a major game (Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!), as well as the bundles for that game and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so it’s no wonder Media Create expect a major increase in both Software and Hardware sales (especially since the PlayStation 4 is also getting its fair shair of releases).

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 46)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games:

  • [NSW] [PS4] RPG Maker MV Trinity (Kadokawa Games) (¥7.800) – 20%. Rather low debut, though the game did sell better on Nintendo Switch (though it’s not clear by how much);
  • [NSW] Gesshizu: Gajigaji Nakama wo Sodateyou (Nippon Columbia). Extremely poor debut;
  • [NSW] Sports Party (Ubisoft). Another extremely poor debut;
  • [NSW] Legendary Fishing  (Ubisoft). Sadly, this one didn’t fare much better…

Dengeki (Week 45 2018, Fiscal Year)

Dengeki report that Luigi’s Mansion sold about 27 000 units at launch, with a rather low sell-through: 45%. Since Luigi’s Mansion 2 sold about 285 000 units at launch (and well over 1 million units LTD), there’s no way to call this a decent performance (though retailers shouldn’t have too much trouble selling the remaining units). As for Super Mario Party, it sold 22 000 additional units, bringing the total since launch to 326 000 units.

It’s the first time in 3 months that a Nintendo 3DS topped the Top 50 Software, since Etrian Odyssey X in early August to be precise. It’s also the second time this has happened this year, which shows just how much sales and new releases have slowed down.

According to Dengeki data, Nintendo 3DS sales are down sharply this Fiscal Year (as of the end of October):

  • Hardware: 250 000 units (-71.7%)
  • Software: 1.25 million units (-76.3%)

But that’s not all: the best-selling Nintendo 3DS this year is WarioWare Gold, which sold a whopping… 124 000 units. Not really something to brag about, especially since none of the other games have managed to sell even 100 000 units! This wouldn’t be too bad for monthly sales, but we’re talking about sales over a 6 months period here (including the Summer season).

Dengeki point out that it’s now been well over 7 years since the Nintendo 3DS launched (in February 2011), and it’s now sold over 24 million units, so it was inevitable that sales would drop… and it’s only going to continue from now on. It’s pretty clear that the market is now focused on the Nintendo Switch, even though sales of that platform definitely could be better Software-wise (especially for the market leader).

In the future, Dengeki are going to pay attention to Nintendo 3DS sales: are they going to keep dropping, or are they going to hit a threshold? We most likely will not get to see a major drop until the holiday season is over, even though said holiday season is unlikely to provide a major boost.

Next week (technically this week), Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! comes out, and it’s one of the major games of the holiday season. So far, there isn’t a single million-seller this Fiscal Year, and the best-selling game is Splatoon 2 with 422 000 units. Fortunately, this new Pokémon should shake things up a fair bit!
