Japan: more sales data for Week 39 2018, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 39)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 588 000 units during Week 39, which is 191.09% of Week 38 sales.

This week again, there was a ton of new releases (20 in total!), and since some of them sold pretty well, it’s no wonder that sales of new releases would increase significantly: they rose from 62 000 units last week to 358 000 units this week! What’s more, the top-selling games are all new releases: in fact, 8 of the 10 games of the Top 10 came out during Week 39.

But it’s not just Software that’s on the rise: Hardware sales also increased to 74 000 units (that’s 115.67% of Week 38 sales). Media Create point out that it’s the first time in 4 weeks that both Software and Hardware sales are up Week on Week.

The main release is Warriors Orochi 4, which sold a combined 124 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. The platform breakdown is as follows:

  • PlayStation 4: 101 000 units
  • Nintendo Switch: 24 000 units

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 40)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games:

  • [NSW] [PS4] Mega Man 11 (Capcom) – 30%. Decent debut, but nothing too impressive. Nintendo Switch version had better debut;
  • [NSW] Work x Work (FuRyu)  – 20%. Low debut, sadly not unexpected for a game by FuRyu…
  • [NSW] Sumikko Gurashi: Atsumare! Sumikko Town (Nippon Columbia) – 10%. Extremely low first day sales, but nothing worrying at all: sales will increase during the weekend, and the game will keep selling on the long run. This low debut is pretty standard for the Sumikko Gurashi series.

Dengeki (Week 39)

Dengeki report slightly higher sales for Warriors Orochi 4,with roughly 140 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. The platform breakdown is as follows:

  • PlayStation 4: 112 000 units
  • Nintendo Switch: 28 000 units

Dengeki note that it’s not as good as the previous entry, Warriors Orochi 3 (released back in 2011), which sold 209 000 units at launch (and 404 000 units LTD). However, they point out that there was strong interest in the game, as shown by the high sell-through of the PlayStation 4 version (about 90%, leading to shortages during the weekend).

They also report 26 000 units sold for Dragon Ball FighterZ on Nintendo Switch, and 70 000 units sold for FIFA 19 (all platforms combined).

And this week, we also get data for the current Fiscal Year, and more precisely the period going from April 2nd to September 30th. First, some raw data:

  • Hardware: 1.94 million units (-32.9%) / 56.6 billion Yen (-26.9%)
  • Software: 9.7 million units (-27.4%) / 61.4 billion Yen (-25.6%)
  • Total: 118 billion Yen (-26.2%)

During the first half of the current Fiscal Year, sales dropped sharply in both the Software and Hardware markets. If you’ve read previous reports from Dengeki, you already know that this drop is mostly due to the lack of major hit to carry the market.

Next, here’s the Top 5 Software, made exclusively of Nintendo Switch games:

  1. Splatoon 2 (Nintendo): 420 000 units
  2. Mario Tennis Aces (Nintendo): 350 000 units
  3. Minecraft (Microsoft Japan): 330 000 units
  4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo): 290 000 units
  5. Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo): 270 000 units

As you can see for yourself, only one of those games was effectively released during the current Fiscal Year. What’s more, none of them managed to sell even 500 000 units (let alone 1 million). That’s definitely a weak performance!

The previous Fiscal Year saw the first increase in nearly a decade for the Japanese market, but unfortunately, the current one fell back to Fiscal Year 2016-17 levels… Hopefully, things will start improving starting this month, with the release of several major titles in a row (starting with Super Mario Party, today!).

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:

ETC 2,533 0.4% 51,383 0.5%
Total 621,188 100.0% 9,701,939 100.0%

And here’s Hardware sales:
