Japan: more sales data for Week 28 2019, God Eater 3, Handheld market (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 29)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch games (games and platforms listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [NSW] Sumikko Gurashi: Gakkou Seikatsu Hajimerun Desu <ETC> (Nippon Columbia) {2019.07.18} (¥5.800) – 20%. Okayish debut for this kind of game, sales in the long run will be key.

Dengeki (Week 28)

Dengeki report that Super Mario Maker 2 sold 53 000 additional units, and was the best-selling game for the 3rd week in a row. It’s now sold over 300 000 units since launch. After the same amount of weeks, the previous two Super Mario Maker games had sold:

  • Wii U: 251 000 units (1.01 million units LTD)
  • Nintendo 3DS: 413 000 units (1.2 million units LTD)

One thing to note is that Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS was released in December, during the holiday season, so its sales trajectory isn’t really comparable with Super Mario Maker 2’s. Only the Wii U version’s is, and so far, the Nintendo Switch entry is outselling it by a comfortable margin (the gap will only widen during the Summer holiday season).

As for God Eater 3, Dengeki report that it sold about 22 000 units at launch, with a good sell-through: 70%. Of course, that’s nothing compared to the original version on PlayStation 4 (144 000 units at launch, and 209 000 units LTD), but that’s late ports for you.

Once again, the top of the charts is dominated by Nintendo Switch games.

Finally, Dengeki report that Puru-Chara Friends Hoppe-chan to Sanrio Characters sold 1 085 units at launch, which is really poor.

With the announcement of the Nintendo Switch Lite, a new model exclusively dedicated to Handheld Mode, Dengeki is looking back at the ratio of home consoles and handhelds in total Hardware sales in the past few years.

First, the period from 2011 to 2014: handhelds accounted for about 70% of the market, thanks to the success of the Nintendo 3DS. But the rise of the mobile market led to a quick drop in sales of game consoles. During the Fiscal Year 2018-19, handhelds only accounted for 9.3% of Hardware sales. That number dropped to 5.9% during the current Fiscal Year (as of this week).

Dengeki is interested in seeing how things will change during the second half of the Fiscal Year, with Pokémon: Sword and Shield in November and Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March. Both series were pretty popular on handhelds, and contributed to their popularity, and so it will be interesting to see their impact on Nintendo Switch sales, especially with the Handheld Mode-only Nintendo Switch Lite.

Will the situation improve for the handheld market? Will there be synergy with the popular games released for Nintendo Switch? See you in a few months to find out!
