Japan: more sales data for Week 27 2019, Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data report from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 28)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one game:

  • [NSW] God Eater 3 <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥6.800) – 40%. A decent performance. Nothing mindblowing, but nothing bad either!

Dengeki (Week 27)

Dengeki report that Super Mario Maker 2 was the best-selling game in Japan for the second week in a row, with about 84 000 units sold. This brings total sales to 247 000 units. Naturally, they expect sales to keep growing during the Summer holidays season, but they wonder if the game will be able to bring more users to get a Nintendo Switch Online subscription (since it’s required to fully enjoy the game).

As for Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle, it’s off to a decent start with 36 000 units sold (including 20 000 units on Nintendo Switch alone). It sold about 19.7% of what the original version sold at launch (183 000 units across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and PlayStation Vita). Considering this is just an expanded re-release, with the additional content sold as DLC for the original version, this is a fairly decent performance.

PixARK sold about 13 000 units at launch, with both version selling more or less the same amount.

Next, let’s take a look at the one other entry in the Top 50 Software:

  • [NSW] Clannad (Prototype): 1 162 units sold. Low sales, but hardly surprising for the port of a game already ported to so many different platforms.

This week, Dengeki take a look at sales during the first quarter of the current Fiscal Year (April to June), and things are not looking too hot:

  • Hardware: 180 000 units sold (-14.1%) / 24.1 billion Yen (-9%)
  • Software: 3 590 000 units (-21%) / 22.1 billion Yen (-27.2%)
  • Total: 46.2 billion Yen (18.7%)

According to Dengeki data, this is the lowest the market has been in 10 years.

To the surprise of literally no one, the market dominated sale by a wide marging: its market share is 62.4%, which is nearly twice more than the PlayStation 4 with “only” 32.8% of sales. Combined, the two platforms account for 96.2% of total sales during Q1, leaving only scraps to the other platforms.

For Dengeki, the announcement of the Nintendo Switch Lite, a portable-only SKU of the Nintendo Switch, is going to be interesting. After all, the current market is monopolised by home consoles, and the question is whether this portable-only console will be able to grab a significant market share, and also revitalise the whole market (which has been rather sluggish lately) in the process.
