Japan: more sales data for Week 26 2019, Super Mario Maker 2, June 2019 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data report from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 27)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch titles (games and platforms are listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [NSW] [PS4] Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) (¥7.800) – 30%. An average debut, but not too surprising for what is basically an enhanced re-release;
  • [NSW] [PS4] PixArk <ADV> (Spike Chunsoft) (¥5.500) – 20%. Not the best of debut, but not a complete flop either.

Dengeki (Week 26)

Dengeki report that Super Mario Maker 2 sold about 163 000 units at launch, with a relatively good sell-through: 55%. This may seem like a low ratio at first glance, but that just shows how confident retailers are in the game. Of course, they will have no trouble selling the remaining units, and then some (a lot) more!

This “sequel” did outsell the previous two games in the series at launch:

  • Super Mario Maker (Wii U): 137 000 units at launch (1.01 million units LTD)
  • Super Mario Maker (Nintendo 3DS): 150 000 units at launch (1.5 million units LTD).

The discrepancy between the different trackers is quite striking, as Media Create reported about 230 000 units sold, and Famitsu 196 000 units.

Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu is off to a great start, with about 79 000 units sold, and a good sell-through ratio (65%). However, compared to the previous entry, it did not do too hot: it sold 192 000 units at launch, and 392 000 units LTD. Summer sales will be key for this game.

Next, let’s take a look at the other Nintendo Switch entries in the Top 50 Software from Dengeki:

  • Jinrui no Minna-sama e (Nippon Ichi Software): 3 862 units sold on Nintendo Switch (vs. 5 609 units on PlayStation 4), a more satisfying result than previous games from Nippon Ichi Software;
  • CLOCK ZERO ~Shuuen no Ichibyou~ Devote (Idea Factory): 3 387 units, an unsurprising result for an Otome game;
  • Puyo Puyo eSports (SEGA): 3 387 units sold, a good result for a game sold 500 Yen on the Nintendo eShop for many weeks;
  • La-Mulana 2 (Playism): 850 units on Nintendo Switch, and 727 units on PlayStation 4. A really low number, but definitely not unexpected for a retail release of an indie game sold quite cheaper on the Nintendo eShop.

This week, no less than 20 new games were released, and so the market saw a noticeable increase:

  • Hardware: 76 300 units (+48.3% compared to same week last year)
  • Software: 506 000 units (+60.3% compared to same week last year)

Unfortunately, this good performance was not enough to prevent another drop in sales in June (June 3rd to June 30th). Here’s some raw data:

  • Hardware: 260 000 units (-17.4%) / 8.2 billion Yen (-11.8%)
  • Software; 1 200 000 units (-9.6%) / 7.2 billion Yen (-19.8%)
  • Total: 15.4 billion Yen (-15.7%)

It’s the third month in a row that sales are down Year on Year, but things should start improving with the Summer holidays season.

Here’s the Top 3 Software for June 2019:

  1. [NSW] Yo-kai Watch 4 (Level-5): 189 000 units
  2. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo): 163 000 units
  3. [NSW] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu (Konami): 83 000 units
