Japan: more sales data for Week 12 2019, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 12)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 689 000 units, which is 157.19% of Week 11 sales. That noticeable increase is mainly due to two things: the release of major games, and the public holiday on Thursday (along with the start of Spring break for students).

Also, the number of new releases more than doubled compared to Week 11, and so did their sales. They account for no less than 58.57% of total Software sales, which is 22% more than the previous week. With nearly 60% of sales, it’s pretty easy to see that new releases are the main driving force behind the surge in Software sales during Week 12.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 13)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games (platforms and games are listed based on sales, from most successful to least successful):

  • [PS4] [NSW] Winning Post 9 <SLG> (Koei Tecmo) (¥8.800) – 40-50%. Okayish debut;
  • [PS4] [NSW] RemiLore: Lost Girl in the Lands of Lore <ACT> (Pikii) (¥4.000) – 30%. “Standard” debut for a niche, indie release at retail;
  • [NSW] [PS4] The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame <ADV> (Warner Entertainment Japan) (¥3.980). Terrible debut, Japanese players really are not into LEGO games at all.

Dengeki (Week 12)

Dengeki report that Super Robot Taisen T sold about 124 000 units at launch, with about 40 000 units on Nintendo Switch. That’s slightly below what the previous entry, Super Robot Taisen X, opened at: 137 000 units (with 188 000 units LTD).

As for Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy!, it sold 44 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. Finally, Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland did slightly worse, with about 37 000 units on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 combined.

Thanks to the release of popular games, as well as the start of spring break, the market as a whole is up this week:

  • Hardware: 93 000 units (+10.2%)
  • Software: 660 000 units (+59.1%)

Since there’s now only one week left in the current Fiscal Year, Dengeki are taking one last look at sales for it. Unfortunately, both Hardware and Software sales are down:

  • Hardware: 5 870 000 units (-17.3%) / 176.2 billion Yen (-11.4%)
  • Total: 26 520 000 units (-16.9%) / 174.6 billion Yen (-7.6%)
  • Total: 350.9 billion Yen (-96%), down from 387.9 billion yen during the previous Fiscal Year

Of course, it’s going to be pretty hard for the last week of the Fiscal Year to close the gap, but Dengeki are still pretty much looking forward to see where the market ends up when the Fiscal Year is over.
