Japan: more sales data for Week 12, 2017, February 2017, FY 2016-17 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 12, 2017 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published its weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 12, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 648 000 units, which is 48.31% of Week 11 sales. As for Hardware, sales topped 160 000 units, which is 116.01% of Week 11 sales.

Naturally, such a significant drop in Software sales is due to Monster Hunter XX, released the week prior. Meanwhile, Hardware sales are up thanks to the Nintendo Switch, which received sizeable shipments for the first time since launch.

Sales for new releases were pretty limited, with only 17 000 units for 10 titles. On the other hand, sales of previously-released titles were strong: they basically doubled. This is obviously due to Monster Hunter XX, which sold over 280 000 units this week, and 1 129 000 units since launch. It’s the first time this year that a game sells 1 million units.

As for the Nintendo Switch, it sold over 78 000 units this week, and over 520 000 units since launch. After 4 weeks on the market, Nintendo’s new home console hasn’t outsold the Wii U (over 627 000 units, but that’s because it was released during the holiday period), but it’s been selling better than the PlayStation during the same timeframe (440 000 units).

However, the PlayStation 4’s first year was pretty poor overall, so as explained several times before, it’s too early to say whether the Nintendo Switch is a success or not.

Week 12, 2017 (Dengeki)

Dengeki reports 254 000 units sold for Monster Hunter XX during Week 12, and 1 248 000 units since launch. Just like Media Create, they note that it’s the first game to sell at least 1 million units this year.

In comparison, Monster Hunter X had sold over 1.9 million units by the second week, so the drop is quite noticeable for Monster Hunter XX. Dengeki hope that the spring break will boost sales, but it’s clear this expansion is not going to sell anywhere near the original version.

Thanks to the Spring break (for children in elementary and junior-high school), Hardware sales rose by 4.1% (142 000 units), but Software sales were down (-58.2%, 608 000 unit sold). Dengeki report 74 000 units sold for the Nintendo Switch during its 4th week on the market, and 517 000 units since launch.

As for the Fiscal Year (March 28th, 2016 to March 26th, 2017), despite one extra week, Software sales are down by 6.1% (32.38 million units). On the other hand, Hardware sales are up, but only very slightly: +0.2%, with 5.41 million units sold.

Quite interestingly, if we look at the amount of revenue generated, the whole picture changes. Hardware sales are actually down (136.5 billion Yen, -1%), while Software sales are also down, but with a smaller drop: -1.7%, with 328 billion Yen generated.

Finally, here’s the Top 3 Software for the full year:

  1. [3DS] Pokémon Sun and Moon (The Pokémon Company): 3.22 million units
  2. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (Level-5): 1.33 million units

Fiscal Year – March 28th, 2016 to March 26th, 2017 (Famitsu)

For the Fiscal Year, Nintendo 3DS are actually up Year on Year, though not by much. It’s still a surprising result for such an “old” platform, which shows that Nintendo really played their hand well with the Nintendo 2DS. If you look at individual model sales, you can see that all Nintendo 3DS model are down, but that Nintendo 2DS sales compensated for the drop.

To the surprise of no one, Wii U sales dropped like a rock, from 845 261 units to 199 564. Finally, the Nintendo Switch sold 524 371 units, which is a satisfying debut.
