[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 48, 2016 (Nov. 28 – Dec. 04) [Top 50]

Update: full Top 50 from Media Create added!

Media Create – Software

This week, three games on Nintendo 3DS entered the Media Create Top 20, and their sales could not be any different. The first one is Super Mario Maker, which sold 162 180 units (40-60% of all units shipped to retailers) during the first few days: that’s a great debut for this handheld version! By comparison, Super Mario Maker on Wii U sold about 138 000 units during its launch week, but on a much smaller userbase.

In other words, this handheld version of SuperMario Maker seems to have done the job: attract new players who either don’t own a Wii U, or prefer to play on their handheld. There’s no doubt there’s also double-dippers, who were attracted by the extra features and content (such as the 100 levels created by Nintendo).

We can definitely expect strong sales during the holiday period, as Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS is the very kind of game parents would buy for their kids (family-friendly, known and beloved character, focus on creativity).

Whether or not this handheld version manages to catch up to the Wii U version remains to be seen, but if sales remain strong enough in the upcoming weeks, 500 000 units should be reached before the end of the year / in the first weeks of 2017. A bundle would definitely help on the long run, as that’s how Super Mario Maker ended up selling over 1 million units in the first place.

The second Nintendo 3DS games to enter the Media Create Top 20 this week is All Kamen Rider: Rider Revolution, which landed at #5 with 23 308 units sold at launch. That’s a decent debut, much better than the previous Kamen Rider game on Nintendo 3DS (Kamen Rider: Travelers Senki, with about 11 000 units at launch according to Famitsu), but still rather weak (sell through ratio: 20-40%)

The third one is Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters, which had a downright terrible launch: it landed at #11, with only 7 255 units sold. That’s quite clearly a flop, as the sell through ratio is somewhere between 0-20%. Retailers most definitely won’t wait until the holiday period is over before slashing the price of that one…

Next, Pokémon Sun and Moon‘s third week, which was pretty good with 223 000 units sold (-41%) during Week 48, and 2 189 345 units at retail (2 504 329 units including the dual-pack). It’s slightly less than Pokémon X and Y, but now that the holiday period is in full swing, sales should increase from next week onward (the holiday boost came later for Pokémon X and Y, released in October).

Speaking of the infamous holiday boost, it can already be felt with several games:

  • 10./13. [3DS] Mario Party: Star Rush (Nintendo) – 7.859 / 78.084 (+24%). It looks like sales should top 100 000 units before the end of the year, and hopefully, it will reach 150 000 by the end of the holiday period (early January);
  • 12./17. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 6.931 / 189.150 (+28%). The PS Vita version may have started outselling it, the Wii U version is far from done, and as expected, the holiday period is providing a healthy boost in sales. Said sales should have no trouble topping 200 000 units within the next couple of weeks, and maybe 250 000 units before the end of the year;
  • 13./23. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 5.011 / 478.487. The pink ball makes another comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create, and this time, it should stay a bit longer. Sales will definitely top 500 000 units before the end of the year;
  • 16./26. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Mura o Tsukurundesu (Nippon Columbia) – 4.626 / 81.344. This totally unassuming game also makes its comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create, and has in fact already sold more than 80 000 units since launch. It should have no trouble reaching 100 000 units before the end of the year;
  • 18./20. [3DS] Beyblade Burst (FuRyu) – 3.895 / 29.867 (+1%). Despite a rather lukewarm debut, this new Beyblade game saw an increase in sales this week, and will most likely see more in the upcoming weeks.

Unfortunately, Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo is one of the games where the holiday boost isn’t really visible, mainly because it barely came out last week, and the drop was to be expected (very few games managed to sell more during their second week). It sold 9 910 units this week, and 26 827 units since launch.

Finally, we have Splatoon at #20, which makes a comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create after many weeks of absence. It sold 3 714 units during Week 48, which brought total retail sales to 1.5 million units: a remarkable performance for a brand new IP on Wii U. Sales should remain strong throughout the holiday period.

Miitopia comes out during Week 49 (on December 8th), and it will be interesting to see how that title is going to sell, especially as we’re right in the middle of the holiday period.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, sales did increase slightly for the Wii U, due to the holiday period. But as we expected, the increase is rather limited, and in fact, the Wii U didn’t even top 5 000 units sold this week. Media Create reported 32 000 units during the same week, in 2015, and this clearly shows the massive drop in sales this year.

It was unlikely the Wii U would be able to match holiday 2015 sales (without a game of Splatoon’s caliber), but since Nintendo has already killed it, any chance of that ever happening were quite simply non-existent.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales began increasing this week, now that the holiday period has begun in earnest. Nintendo’s handheld sold 78 929 units this week, which is about 8 000 units more than last week, but 25 000 units less than during the same week last year (sales were stronger due to Monster Hunter Generations releasing the previous week).

We can definitely expect sales to keep increasing steadily until Christmas (especially with the steady stream of releases), though it’s not clear how high they will go… or whether they will be able to match those for the holiday period in 2016. Quite interestingly, the increase for Week 48 comes exclusively from the New Nintendo 3DS Xl (the other models, including the Nintendo 2DS, were all slightly down or stable).

Miitopia is one of the games releasing during Week 49 in Japan, and it shouldn’t have a noticeable impact on Hardware sales.

According to Media Create, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 671 208 units since launch. In order to reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 328 792 units during the next 4 weeks. In other words, it needs to sell an average of 82 198 units / week.
