[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 42, 2016 (Oct. 17 – 23) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

Several games came out during Week 42 in Japan, but only one of them was on a Nintendo platform… and it didn’t even sell well. That game is none other than Mario Party: Star Rush, which is out to a really poor start with only 26 473 units sold. That’s by far the worst debut for a Mario Party game, as even Mario Party 10 on Wii U managed to do better.

If Mario Party: Star Rush sells like it should during the holiday period, it should have no trouble reaching 100 000 units LTD. But even if it manages to do that, it will remain the worst-selling entry in the series, and by far. It looks like players were not really interested in a second Mario Party game on Nintendo 3DS, a platform which has had quite a few disappointments this year already.

Week 51 had a public holiday on Monday, which helped boost sales of many games. Naturally, things went “back to normal” during the week that followed, and the drops are quite noticeable. What’s more, no game or platform is spared (obviously, some held up better than others).

Monster Hunter Stories sold 25 550 units during its third week on the market, which is pretty good (considering what we just wrote). That’s a 62% drop compared to last week. Since launch, the game has managed to sell over 230 000 units, and it should manage to reach 250 000 units next week (early November at latest).

So far, Monster Hunter Stories sales are rather decent, but nothing groundbreaking just yet. As mentioned before, holiday sales will be crucial, and that’s only once they’re over that we will be able to tell whether it was a success or a failure. If it’s the latter, then at the very least, we will be able to say that it did better than Gaist Crusher (which is definitely nothing something one should be proud of).

On the other hand, there’s nothing decent about Paper Mario: Color Splash sales, unfortunately. With 7 784 units sold, the game had a slightly better second week than usual for a RPG (-62%), but that’s the only positive point about such sales. With only 28 678 units sold so far, it doesn’t look like Paper Mario: Color Splash will even manage to reach 100 000 units sold. Holiday sales will also be crucial for that title.

As mentioned above, sales dropped significantly for pretty much all games and platforms this week. Here’s how those on Nintendo platforms did according to Media Create:

• 08./05. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (Level 5)  – 7.403 / 1.291.841 (-34%). There are still about 30 000 units left from the first week shipments, and the announcement of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki are most definitely not going to help sales…
• 11./07. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 5.536 / 156.637 (-14%). One of the games that held rather weel this week, but the PS Vita version looks like it’s about to catch up with it;
• 14./12. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter (GungHo Online Entertainment) – 3.861 / 199.500 (-24%). It will finally reach 200 000 units sold next week, and it definitely could reach 250 000 units before the end of the year if holiday sales are good enough;
• 18./14. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) {2016.04.28} – 3.324 / 456.904 (-26%). Solid sales, that should top 500 000 units before the end of the year;
• 20./20. [WIU] Splatoon <ACT> (Nintendo) – 2.514 / 1.484.797 (-19%). It doesn’t look like it want to leave the Top 20 again, but it most likely will in the near future.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, there’s still nothing much to say about the Wii U, which keeps on dropping. This week, it went below the 2 000 units/week threshold, another proof that the console is truly done for (not that the “proofs” haven’t been piling up for a while already). They should slightly improve with the beginning of the holidays (in about a month), but they will most likely remain below 10 000 units.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did drop again this week, with 24 643 units sold during Week 42 according to Media Create. That’s about 3 000 units less than last week, but also 3 000 units more than last year during the same week.

Once again, the Nintendo 2DS is helping the Nintendo 3DS, and is single-handedly responsible for the Year on Year increase.It will not be enough to compensate for the drop in sales for the full year, but it’s still better than nothing for Nintendo.

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 324 193 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 675 807 units during the next 10 weeks. In other words, it needs 67 580 units / week, on average.
