[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 35, 2016 (Aug. 29th – Sept. 4) [Top 50]

We just added the full Top 50 for Media Create, along with Famitsu sales!

Media Create – Software

To say that sales were sluggish this week would be quite the understatement! The best-selling game didn’t even reach 30 000 units, only the Top 3 titles sold more than 10 000 units, and the threshold to get into the Top 20 from Media Create is only 2 789 units. Week 35 has been one of the worst weeks this year, in Japan.

Unsurprisingly, the best-selling title is Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura, with 28 821 unit sold. Despite the end of the Summer holidays, sales didn’t drop too much this week, with a 11% drop according to Media Create. The game has sold 1 181 659 units since launch, which means retailers still have about 120 000 unsold units to get rid of.

Puzzle & Dragons X actually went this week: it gained 7 places at once, despite sales dropping by 18%… this just shows how sluggish sales are. Media Create reports 8 464 units sold for Week 35, and 162 941 units since launch. 200 000 units before the end of the year is well within reach.

As for Minecraft: Wii U Edition, it looks like nothing is able to stop it, or even slow it down significantly (despite a handheld version being available). It sold 7 860 units this week, which means sales were flat (-2%). It passed a milestone this week: it finally sold over 100 000 units since launch. This may not seem much, but it’s the Wii U we’re talking about! 200 000 units sold before the end of the year is looking pretty likely.

Next, we have Kirby: Planet Robobot and Dragon Ball Fusions, which sold 7 088 units (-13%) and 6 938 units (-36%). While Kirby: Planet Robobot did hold better, both titles sold pretty well this week, and are definitely going to stick around in the Top 20 a little bit longer.

Ever since it popped back up in the Top 20, following the launch of Pokémon GO, Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire has enjoyed pretty good sales. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to end any time soon! This week, it was one of the few titles who didn’t experience a significant drop in sales, with 6 668 units sold (-4%) during Week 35, and 2 884 841 units since launch.

Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire will definitely reach 2 900 000 units by the end of the month. Depending on the kind of impact Pokémon Sun and Moon will have on sales, it could very well reach 3 million units at retail alone before the end of the year. In fact, if you count the double-pack (that Media Creates didn’t include in total sales for the game), 3 millions were already reached a while ago.

Splatoon is another game that doesn’t look like it’s going to stop selling anytime soon, though obviously the sluggish market make its sales look even better. With 4 696 units sold during Week 35, it’s one of the only two titles which actually saw their sales increase (+6%). Since launch, Media Create has reported 1 461 203 squids living in Japan.

Next, we have the Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics, which have sold:

  • Nintendo 3DS: 4 132 units this week (-22%), 232 944 units since launch;
  • Wii U: 3 776 units this week (-21%), 90 032 units sold. It’s definitely going to reach 100 000 units within the next couple of months.

Finally, we have the Happy Price Selection edition of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which sold 2 925 units during Week 35, according to Media Create. While the game has always been selling pretty steadily, it’s thanks to the sluggish market that it’s able to make its comeback in the Top 20 (it’s not like sales surged suddenly).

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, there’s nothing much to comment on this week. Nintendo 3DS sales are surprisingly steady (only 16 units less than during the same week, in 2015), most likely thanks to pay day (it’s not like there were major releases to boost sales… there wasn’t any at all). Naturally, sales are down Year on Year (about 10 000 units less), but it’s nothing new.

To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, the Nintendo 3DS needs to sell at least 877 843 units within the next 17 weeks. In other words, it needs 51 637 units / week, on average. Naturally, this will not be possible during most weeks (especially in October), and the key will be:

  • holiday period (late November to late December)
  • the launch of the Nintendo 2DS

Right now, it’s not clear how big of an impact the Nintendo 2DS will have. One thing’s for sure: Nintendo is quite clearly targetting kids with it, so what really matters for it is holiday sales (from late November onwards). There is most definitely going to be a bump the week it comes out (on September 15th), but after a week or two, sales should go back to “normal”.

Finally, we have the Wii U: it sold 4 468 units this week, according to Media Create. It doesn’t look like the Wii U is going to go much lower than this, at least for the time being. The upcoming months are definitely not going to be pretty at all!
