[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 32, 2017 (August 7th – August 13th) [Top 50]

This week, there’s a few entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, but only one is on a Nintendo platform: The Snack World: Trejarers, on Nintendo 3DS. It had a pretty decent debut with 97 534 units sold, which is almost twice as much as the first Yo-kai Watch game (52 901 units during the launch week, according to Famitsu).
However, there’s one major difference with Yo-kai Watch (another cross-media project): the anime series for The Snack World has been airing since April, while the one for Yo-kai Watch debuted 6 months after the game was released. That’s when sales began to increase steadily, and literally exploded when Yo-kai Watch 2 was released in July 2014.
In other words, The Snack World: Trejarers will not have the anime series to boost its sales a few months down the line. In the upcoming weeks, we will see if the game has any potential in the long run, or if it will completely drop from the Top 20 in a few weeks, never to be seen again. If it’s too early to say if The Snack World: Trejarers is a failure or not, but right now, it’s safe to assume it will not be nearly as big as Yo-kai Watch.
Meanwhile, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, it’s still enjoying strong sales on Nintendo 3DS with 116 615 units sold this week. The public holiday on Friday didn’t help prevent a (perfectly normal) drop in sales, but there’s no doubt the drop would have been worse without it. Since launch, this version of the game has sold over 1.5 million units (1 573 216 units to be precise)… and that’s not counting digital sales!
Splatoon 2 also enjoyed strong sales, that actually went up this week thanks to increased Nintendo Switch shipments. In fact, Splatoon 2 sold almost as much as the Nintendo Switch, with less than 200 units separating the two. This comes as no surprise, as most of the Nintendo Switch units sold are Splatoon 2 bundles.
Splatoon 2 is getting closer to the 1 million units threshold at retail, with 915 628 units sold as of Week 31. 1 million should be reached within the next two weeks, before the end of the month at the latest.
As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Summer holidays and the public holiday on Friday had a positive impact on its sales: +25% this week, with 17 262 units sold. We can expect sales to remain at that level another week, which should be enough for it to reach 650 000 units sold before the end of the month.
Unfortunately, Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo had a terrible second week, with -85% during its second week. It barely managed to sell 10 000 units this week, which brings the total to 80 618 units. As we feared, retailers are going to have to resort to price cuts to get rid of the remaining units…
Finally, we have ARMS at #10 with 7 866 units sold. Sales increased noticeably this week (+44%), which is due to Amazon.co.jp selling unofficial bundles with games/accessories, and ARMS got one. Since shortages are still widespread, those bundles have proven to be pretty popular… because there isn’t really any other way to get a console easily (and at the standard price).
Thanks to this nice boost, ARMS is getting closer to 200 000 units sold: it’s currently standing at 197 284 units. Next week, then!
A quick note about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Nintendo Switch version sold 6 642 units this week (+25%), which brings the total since launch to 560 764 units. If you add last known Wii U sales (133 024 units), the game has already sold 693 788 units. To reach 1 million units this year, the remaining 306 212 units need to be sold during the next 20 weeks, so 15 310 units/week.
Now, let’s take a look at the games in the second half of the Top 20:
- 11./07. [3DS] Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy (Level 5) – 7.131 / 115.188 (-44%). Sales are still at a decent level, but nowhere near previous entries;
- 12./09. [3DS] Hey! Pikmin (Nintendo) – 6.863 / 114.750 (-19%). Sales remain good, with 150 000 units LTD definitely within reach (it’s not going to happen in the near future, though);
- 14./12. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Dokonan Desu? (Nippon Columbia) – 6.246 / 40.354 (+20%). As we expected, sales are up during holiday weeks. No doubt sales will remain strong next week;
- 15./14. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 5.380 / 218.378 (+25%). Did someone say ‘unstoppable’? Well, you can say it again, because just once clearly wasn’t enough;
- 17./13. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 4.865 / 3.309.571 (+13%). Pokémon gets the usual holiday boost;
- 19./21. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} – 3.570 / 242.742. Thanks to the holiday boost and increased Nintendo Switch, 1-2-Switch makes its comeback in the Top 20. It could still be there next week, but it’s not guaranteed;
- 20./19. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) – 3.353 / 2.802.588 (+19%). Do you have some ‘unstoppable’ left, or did you use them all on Animal Crossing: New Leaf? Because Mario Kart 7 also deserve its own share of them!

This week saw a noticeable increase in Nintendo Switch shipments, due to the public holiday on Friday and Obon. As a results, sales rose to 87 798 units, which is a pretty satisfying result. It certainly leaves us wondering about Week 32 sales, since Obon week was split in two this year. We can definitely expect shipments to remain big, but how big is the real question.
One thing’s for sure though: Week 32 should be the last week when the Nintendo Switch sells that many units, since the Summer holiday season is over pretty soon. After that, we can expect sales to drop noticeably, though it’s not clear how low they will drop. That being said, we do have Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. and its bundle, on August 25th, but it’s not expected to have a really strong impact on sales (and bundle is expected to be limited).
But if there’s something we can say with certainty right now: shortages are there to say, unfortunately. Demand for the Nintendo Switch isn’t expected to go down any time soon, and it’s going to be months until sales are no longer hindered by those pesky shortages.
If sales remain strong enough, the Nintendo Switch could hit 1.5 million units sold next week.
Quite surprisingly, the Nintendo 3DS saw its sales drop this week, to 45 730 units. This is due to the massive boost provided by Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age a couple of weeks ago, which brought it to unusual heights for a non-end of year holiday period.
That being said, the Nintendo 3DS is still up Year on Year this week, with 15 000 units more than during the same week in 2016. If you look at Year to Date sales, 2017 is almost 200 000 units ahead of 2016 (100 000 if you take into account the Pokémon Nintendo 2DS bundle). If 2016 was to “catch up” with 2017, it certainly would not be until quite later this year, and the drop YoY for the full year would most likely not be too big.
Finally, the Wii U sold 132 units this week.
