Software

Week 16 wasn’t as calm as Week 15 was, as several games came out in Japan during that week. That being said, sales remained rather sluggish for the most part, and new entries on Nintendo platforms didn’t perform too well. First, we have Star Fox Zero, which was released in two editions (listed separately, as one includes an additional game):

Star Fox Zero + Star Fox Guard: 17 114 units (20-40% of all units shipped to retailers according to Famitsu)
Star Fox Zero (stand-alone): 8 135 units (20-40% of all units shipped to retailers, according to Famitsu)

Overall, Star Fox Zero sold about 25 000 units, which is pretty poor: it’s the worst launch for a Star Fox game, by far.

Unfortunately, the writing was on the wall for this game: not only the Wii U platform is pretty toxic even for popular IPs, but Star Fox’s popularity has been declining ever since Star Fox 64. What’s more, Star Fox Zero is quite the divise game (especially the controls), which certainly didn’t help sales. Finally, some players may have been reluctant to get it, since it wasn’t an entirely original entry (and more a reimagining).

The second entry of the week on Nintendo platforms is Terraria, on Nintendo 3DS. It had a pretty unexciting debut, with 7 251 units sold during the first four days (20-40% of all units shipped to retailers). But unlike Star Fox Zero, Terraria should keep selling on the long run, as the PlayStation Vita version did a couple of years ago.

The other games in the Top 20 had pretty slow sales for the most part, though as usual, some titles on Nintendo platforms are holding pretty well. It’s the case of Yo-kai Sangokushi, which sold 28 758 units (-31%), and Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, which sold 15 940 units (-35%, still disappointing sales).

As for Splatoon, it dropped from #6 to #14 in one week, due to the many releases this week (even if they didn’t sell all that much). Still, sales remain strong with 6 470 units sold (-4%). This is also the case for Super Mario Maker (it sold 5 873 units, -2%), thanks to Nintendo finally shipping enough units of the Wii U Premium Pack to retailers. Shortages are not quite over yet, but the situation has really improved compared to the past few weeks.

Finally, Disney Art Academy is about to drop from the Top 20: it sold 4 646 units this week (-45%). With the Golden Week starting tomorrow in Japan (April 29th), it may receive a noticeable boost in the next two weeks.

Hardware (Week 16)

Hardware-wise, there’s nothing really special to note this week. The Nintendo 3DS sold 18 261 units during Week 16, which is slightly worse than during Week 15. That being said, sales remain rather stable compared to last year during the same week (when Nintendo’s handheld wasn’t selling like hot pancakes to begin with), which is rather good news.

As for the Wii U, sales are slightly down this week, with 5 968 units sold. As mentioned earlier, it looks like Nintendo is finally getting the shortages situation under control. Shortages are not a thing of the past just yet, but things have really improved compared to the past couple of months. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo manages to keep up with demand during the Golden Week…
