[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 15, 2017 (April 10 – April 16) [Top 50]

Week 15 was another calm week for the Japanese market, with only two minor entries in the Top 20 (unfortunately, none of them is on a Nintendo platform).
Monster Hunter XX is #1 of sales for the 5th week in a row, which isn’t all that surprising for the latest entry in a popular series during such a calm period. With 43 941 additional units sold (-33%), the game is holding pretty well, even though it’s pretty far from Capcom’s initial goal (2 million units before April 1st… it’s currently standing at 1 366 093 units sold since launch!).
This week again, there’s quite a few Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20, so let’s take a look at how they’ve all been selling:
- 02./02. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 20.888 / 375.291 (-9%). Sales remain remarkably steady, which is to be expected for the most popular game on the platform (a title it’s going to keep until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, releasing next week).
The Wii U version sold 4 740 units this week (-27%), and finally reached the 100 000 units milestone. It looks like when all is said and done, this version of the game will end up selling over 150 000 units. Combined, the Nintendo Switch and Wii U versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have sold 475 837 units since launch. They will reach 500 000 units before the end of the month, maybe as early as next week.
- 04./04. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 10.048 / 176.368 (-19%). This one should reach 200 000 units sold in early May, or maybe before the end of the month if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a positive impact on its sales;
- 13./15. [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami) – 3.508 / 70.124 (-17%). Sales topped 70 000 units this week, and 100 000 units LTD looks like a lock!
Next, we have Mario Sports Superstars at #3, with 10 698 units sold. Sales remain surprisingly “good” given the mediocre debut, and it looks like it should be able to easily sell over 100 000 units. Sales during the Golden Week (which starts next week) will be interesting, and will tell us where LTD sales should end.
As for Pokémon Sun and Moon, it’s selling like it’s been selling in the past few months: pretty steadily. 4 773 units were sold this week (-32%), which brings the total to 3 241 599 units (not including the dual-pack and digital sales, as usual). Sales should see a healthy boost during the Golden Week.
Finally, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:
- 11./13. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 4.325 / 1.019.434 (-24%);
- 17./18. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.035 / 162.184 (-24%). Yes, this one is still hanging around in the Top 20, and it looks like it’s going to keep doing so for a few more weeks at least;
- 19./23. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level 5) – 2.802 / 704.683. This one finally makes its comeback in the Top 20, thanks to slow sales for the market as a whole (the barrier of entry for the Top 20 is pretty low, as you can see for yourself below).

This week, all platforms saw a drop in sales, with one exception… the Nintendo Switch (and the Xbox One, actually). It looks like Nintendo did manage to ship a few more units this week, but it clearly was not enough to keep up with demand (some stores still resort to lotteries to determine who can buy the few units they do get!).
As explained last week, Nintendo Switch sales are not dropping because Nintendo cannot keep up with demand. Since demand is not met, there are still many potential buyers still waiting to buy a console, and said demand is “transferred” to the following weeks (and it will continue until shortages end).
This week, the Nintendo Switch sold 45 673 units, which is about 4 000 units more than during Week 14. Since launch, over 650 000 consoles have been sold: a pretty decent debut for Nintendo’s new console. What’s more, it’s now outselling both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS (launch aligned), which is another positive sign.
The Nintendo 3DS had a great debut, but sales quickly died down (and didn’t really recover until the price drop in August). It looks like the Nintendo Switch is definitely not going to follow a similar sales trajectory, especially with Splatoon in July (not to mention Mario Kart 8 Deluxe next week).
Speaking of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it will be interesting to see how many units Nintendo ends up shipping to retailers, and if this week (Week 16) is going to see a bigger shipment (it’s likely the company will choose to focus on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launch week).
As for the Nintendo 3DS, it’s holding pretty well with 23 824 units sold this week: that’s only 2 000 units less than last week. Compared to the same week last year, the Nintendo 3DS is still up Year on Year, but it’s not clear how long it will stay like this. It’s likely the Golden Week will put an end to that “winning streak”.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia comes out tomorrow, but it shouldn’t have too much of an impact on Nintendo 3DS. It’s definitely going to provide a boost, but you should not expect something like 50 000 units for example.
Finally, the Wii U sold 271 units this week. RIP.
