[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 50, 2018 (December 10th – December 16th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 50 2018 in Japan.

Media Create

Week 50 is the one just before Christmas, which is why it’s no wonder the Top 20 from Media Create has some many games on Nintendo platforms in it. There was a few new releases, but only one on Nintendo platforms among those that did manage to chart: Senran Kagura Peach & Reflex Limited W Pack.

This bundle, which includes both Senran Kagura Reflexions and Peach Ball Senran Kagura, sold about 10 000 units at launch, which is a decent performance considering half of it has been available on the Nintendo eShop for about a year now. Unfortunately, it will be gone from the Top 20 as early as next week, since sales for that kind of games is heavily concentrated on the first week (and the holiday season boosts sales of family-friendly games, and Senran Kagura doesn’t really qualify as “family-friendly”!).

After an incredibly strong debut, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate enjoyed an equally strong second week. It sold 406 617 additional units (-67%, a great drop for a game that sold over 1 million units at launch), which brings the total to over 1.6 million units (1 627 162 units to be precise). Since Week 51 is by far the biggest week of the year for video games sales in Japan, it looks like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might very well become a multi-million seller as early as next week (it definitely will if you factor in digital sales).

By the way, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now outsold Super Smash Bros. Melee (about 1.5 million units), and Super Smash Bros. (on Nintendo 64) will be next (a little under 2 million units). At this rate, there’s little doubt it will end up the best-selling Super Smash Bros. game of all times. If it keeps selling on the long run like the usual evergreen titles, it could also outsell both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS combined (but not anytime soon!).

As for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!, it’s also enjoying strong sales: 108 773 units this week (+16%), according to Media Create. While it’s not selling as well as a “regular” mainline entry, it’s still performing at a satisfactory level, which bodes well for the brand new game releasing next year. With 1 121 020 units sold as of this week, it looks like we will have to wait until early 2019 for the 1.5 million units milestone to be reached.

Next: Super Mario Party. The holiday season is just perfect for family-friendly games, and this one is proof of that. Despite a major increase due to the Joy-Con bundle, sales have been increasingly steadily since then, reaching nearly 100 000 units this week (97 529 units, +40%). But no need to be disappointed: it definitely will reach that number next week! Super Mario Party has now sold 587 295 units, and it will end the year with well over 700 000 units LTD. 1 million units LTD is a definite possibility.

The usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch all saw a major increase in sales. Take Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for example: 29 422 units sold this week (+40%), and 1 911 174 units LTD. Unfortunately, it looks like we will have to wait until early 2019 for the 2 million units milestone!

Minecraft has been selling well all year long every year ever since its first retail release, but to the surprise of no one, the holiday season is one of its strongest periods. With the Nintendo Switch being a desirable platform, it’s no wonder sales of that version would be strong. It sold 27 265 units this week (+63%), bringing the total to 431 410 LTD. Sales will once again increase during Week 51, and it should be enough for the 500 000 units milestone to be reached before the end of the year (Week 1 2019 at the very latest).

This holiday season, Splatoon 2 has plenty of competition (it’s not longer the only game in the spotlight), but despite that, it’s still enjoying strong sales. It sold 27 035 additional units this week, which is 42% more than during the previous one. Just like all the other evergreen titles in the Top 20 from Media Create, we can safely expect sales to increase once more next week, which is when total sales will reach 2.8 million units. For 3 million units, we will have to wait until early next year!

But it’s not just multiplayer-focused games that are selling well this holiday season: even Single-Player games such as Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are seeing a noticeable increase in sales (and they were already enjoying strong sales to begin with!).

The former sold 14 417 units (+50%), bringing the total to 1 880 842 units (2 million units will be reached in early 2019). As for the latter, it sold 13 670 units (+43%), bringing the total to 1 195 951 units. Both games are expected to sell even more during Week 51.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 11./12. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo) – 12.027 / 670.296 (+57%). It will reach 700 000 units during Week 1 (2019), maybe Week 52 if Week 51 sales are particularly strong;
  • 13./15. [3DS] Luigi’s Mansion (Nintendo) – 9.575 / 64.375 (+48%). It may be a disappointment compared to Luigi’s Mansion 2, that doesn’t mean it’s not going to sell during the holiday season;
  • 14./17. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! (Bandai Namco Games) – 8.063 / 244.283 (+58%). Holiday season boosting sales on ce again;
  • 16./18. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 6.665 / 1.780.187 (+35%). Between this one and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!, Pokémon is having a fairly good holiday season!
  • 18./20. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Drive Kit (Nintendo) – 5.938 / 49.389 (+65%). It already made its comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create last week, but sales further increased this week;
  • 19./22. [NSW] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Nintendo) – 5.640 / 154.936. Finally makes its comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create, which allows us to see it has now sold over 150 000 units LTD… and that’s not counting the Nintendo 3DS version!
  • 20./19. [NSW] Mario Tennis Aces (Nintendo) – 5.318 / 381.800 (+48%). It’s drawing nearer and near to the 400 000 units milestone!

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales are perfectly flat, which is quite the feat after the explosive increase due to the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the previous week. The combined effect of that launch and the holiday season is doing wonders for the Nintendo Switch, and the performance is even more impressive when you take into account the fact the console is still being sold at full price. This certainly makes you wonder how long Nintendo will try to avoid dropping the price of its console, but given how strong holiday sales have been, it’s most likely not going to be any time soon!

The Nintendo Switch sold 281 213 units, which is significantly more than last year during the same period (+62 000 units). The main difference this year is the much stronger Software line-up, with strong new releases (Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eeeve!, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate), and equally strong evergreen titles (Super Mario Party, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, etc.). Unless sales come crashing down during Week 51 and 52 (literally impossible), total sales for 2018 will end up higher than 2017 sales by a fair margin (lower than expected, though).

By the way, the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 3 million units in 2018 alone. Given expected sales for Week 51 and 52, the console should end the year with about 3.5 million units sold (4 million units is highly unlikely, since it would require the console to sell an average of 500 000 units).

Nintendo 3DS sales also increased, which shows the little handheld still has some life left in it (though not that much). With 20 037 units sold this week, sales are down Year on Year (by about 35 000 units), but that’s something we’re already mentioned countless times this year. It may well be one of the few last weeks ever the Nintendo 3DS sells over 10 000 units…
