Japan – Media Create sales for Week 45, 2015 (Nov. 2 – 8) [Top 50]

***During Week 45, several games came out on Nintendo platforms in Japan. The first one is Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2, which landed at #2 with 73 824 units during the first four days. This is a rather good performance, though worse than the original (which sold over 100 000 units on its launch week). And according to Famitsu, roughly 20-40% of all units sent to retailers were effectively sold.

However, there’s absolutely no cause for concern, as both Bandai-Namco and retailers expect the game to sell well over the holidays. The first Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (which came out in August 2013) sold over 500 000 units, but it would be surprising if this sequel sold as much. That being said, that doesn’t mean it cannot sell well on a long period of time, though we will have to wait until next year (and the end of the holiday period) before fiding out.

The second Nintendo 3DS game which came out last week in Japan is LEGO Jurassic World, which landed at #18. It sold 4 499 units during the first four days, which is twice as much as the Wii U version (2 772 units sold, #21, according to Famitsu). For both games, the sell-through ratio is between 20 – 40%. The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of LEGO Jurassic World are the only ones who managed to chart in the Media Create and Famitsu charts.

In the rest of the Top 20, several games saw their sales rising during Week 45, due to Monday, November 3rd (which was a public holiday). We have Yo-kai Watch Busters (+2%), Super Mario Maker (+12%), Splatoon (+16%), Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (+6%), and even Pro Yakyuu Famista Returns (+19%; it looks like Bandai-Namco finally sent more copies to retailers).

The great sales of Yo-kai Watch Busters, Super Mario Maker, Splatoon and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer in November show that those games will be pretty popular during the holiday period. This is generally the case for most Nintendo games (especially the most family-focused ones), and even on Wii U.

Hardware-wise, sales of the Nintendo 3DS increased significantly during Week 45, which is primarily due to the launch of the Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2 x New Nintendo 3DS bundle. You can see that in the chart below, which shows that most of the increase comes from the New Nintendo 3DS.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 30 383 units during Week 45, which is still far behind its 2014 sales. Of course, there is no way for it to catch up anymore, but at least the release of Monster Hunter X (and the New Nintendo 3DS XL bundle), as well as several New Nintendo 3DS Packs, should provide a healthy boost (in order to kick off the holiday period with a bang).

As for the Wii U, its sales are slightly up this week (mostly due to the holiday, on Monday), but it wasn’t enough to let the Wii U surface above the 10 000 units/week threshold. That being said, the Splatoon Wii U Premium Pack (coming out today in Japan) should be enough to boost its sales before the start of the holiday period.
