[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 42, 2018 (October 15th – October 21st) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales data for the Japanese video game market, courtesy of Media Create and Famitsu!

Media Create

Week 42 saw the releases of quite a few games, which is why the first half of the Top 20 provided by Media Create saw a fair amount of activity. But despite the various entries, the two games at the top are the same as last week!

One of the new releases is Dark Souls Remastered on Nintendo Switch, which sold 14 646 units during launch week. That’s a rather decent performance… for a late release of a remaster, that is. Unfortunately, from the moment Bandai-Namco and From Software announced the delay of that version (released half a year after the other platforms), it became clear its potential would suffer a fair bit.

In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 70 000 units at launch, according to Famitsu data. It’s still possible the game may end up selling decently in the long run, but this kind of “hardcore” game usually tend to sell the most during the first few weeks (especially late releases).

The other entry this week is another late version of a remaster: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. It’s off to a pretty average debut, with 5 217 units sold. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 19 000 units at launch, according to Famitsu data. The Cransh Bandicoot series really isn’t all that popular in Japan (anymore), so it’s no wonder the Nintendo Switch did not set the charts on fire.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Party keeps on selling well, with 36 381 additional units this week. Sales once again dropped (-43%), but that’s hardly surprising during a slow month like October… in fact, it’s quite remarkable sales haven’t dropped (much) faster so far. Of course, with the holiday season on the horizon, sales will end up rising again sooner rather than later. The game will reach 250 000 units next week, and 300 000 units next month: it’s currently sitting at 242 700 units sold.

Minecraft on Nintendo Switch is another game that keeps selling, though sales did drop slightly this week with 8 325 units sold (-20%). Total sales are now over 334 343 units, and it will reach 350 000 units in a couple of weeks. It’s already guaranteed to reach 500 000 units before the end of the year, and the question now is when (not even if) it will reach 1 million units LTD.

The other two Nintendo Switch evergreens in the Top 10 provided by Media Create are Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sold 7 293 units and 6 774 units sold respectively. Once again, sales of those two games are pretty close, even tough their total sales definitely are not: 2 671 037 units for Splatoon 2, and 1 803 792 units for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Despite the slow period, they’re still enjoying strong sales, which bodes reallt well for the holiday season.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

12./11. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 4.442 / 1.138.631 (-13%). Sales remain strong and steady;
14./14. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co. – 3.666 / 1.746.570 (-9%). Week after week, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! draws ever nearer, but this game just keeps on selling… pretty unusual for the Pokémn series!
17./15. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 2.962 / 1.831.692 (-15%). If it doesn’t drop from the Top 20 from Media Create next week, then it will have spent a full year in it!
18./13. [NSW] Dragon Ball FighterZ (Bandai Namco Games) – 2.779 / 38.664 (-38%). Sales keep on dropping, and the game is most likely going to drop off the Top 20 from Media Create as early as next week;
19./18. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! (Bandai Namco Games) – 2.535 / 215.620 (-22%). One more week in the Top 20 for this game… most likely the last one before the start of the holiday season;
20./22. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Drive Kit (Nintendo) – 2.412 / 29.988. Steady sales allows this one to make an unexpected comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create. Sadly, total sales are still pretty low… not even 50 000 units yet!

This week again, Nintendo Switch sales are down, but the drop is quite limited (barely 2 000 units). The console sold 42 148 units this week, which is a respectable number given the total lack of notable releases. Ever since the end of the holiday season, sales have been pretty unexcting, but at the very least, they remain steady enough. It’s yet another week where our prediction (sales to remain in the 35-50 000 units range until the release of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!) turns out to be accurate.

Sales on a weekly basis remain up Year on Year, but it’s going to change next week due to the release of Super Mario Odyssey (and its bundle) last year, which greatly boosted sales. There’s no such release this year, but fortunately, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and its bundles + the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundle, are not that far.

Total sales this year could reach 2 million units as early as next week, but we will most likely have to wait until Week 44 for that (at least, with Media Create’s data).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did drop slightly this week, but it’s hardly something relevant at this point (especially since the drop itself is quite limited). The handheld sold 6 412 units this week.
