Japan – Media Create sales for Week 39, 2015 (September 21st – 27th) [Top 50]

No game came out on Nintendo platforms during Week 39 in Japan, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing interesting in the charts this week… quite the opposite. Due to the Silver Week (series of public holidays happening only once every five years or so), sales of several games actually went up or were pretty stable.
It’s the case of Super Mario Maker, which sold 52 396 additional units in Japan (-4%), and over a million worldwide. Since launch, the game has sold almost 250 000 units in Japan alone (excluding digital sales), which means that roughly a quarter of the total worldwide sales come from Japan alone.
As for Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, it dropped pretty sharply during its second week (-71%, which is pretty common for such a “hardcore” series): it went from 151 823 units to 44 555 units sold, which means there’s still ~60 000 units left unsold at retailers. Of course, they should have no trouble selling the rest in the upcoming weeks without resorting to major price cuts.
Next, we have Yo-kai Watch Busters, which enjoyed some rather good sales during Week 39 (+7%, 39 468 units sold). Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Splatoon did even better, and enjoyed a welcome increase in sales with 21 785 units (+19%) and 20 736 units sold (+24%) respectively. Those two titles definitely benefited from the Silver Week, though their sales should remain strong in the upcoming weeks.
Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS went up, and sold 29 110 units during Week 39 (which is almost as much as during the same week, in 2014). As expected, the Silver Week had a limited yet noticeable impact on 3DS sales, but unfortunately, it will not last very long. What’s more, October is one of the worst months for sales, and the Nintendo 3DS will certainly not be spared this year.
Same thing for the Wii U, which did enjoy a great Silver Week: its sales also went slightly up during Week 39, and it sold 18 024 units (which is twice as much as during the same week in 2014). Since the launch of Splatoon, it’s been selling at a much better pace than in 2014, and this shouldn’t change any time soon. However, just like the Nintendo 3DS, October should have a rather negative impact on its sales.
