[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 36, 2018 (September 3rd – September 9th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales data for the Japanese video game market, courtesy of Media Create and Famitsu!

Media Create

Week 36 saw the releases of quite a few games, including a couple of Nintendo platforms. Unfortunately, only one of those managed to find its way to the Top 20 from Media Create: SNK Heroines ~Tag Team Frenzy~. It sold over 15 000 units across the two platforms it was released on, including 5 493 units on Nintendo Switch. This shows that most of the audience for this kind of game isn’t on Nintendo’s platform, but not that there isn’t any at all. Sales are expected to drop sharply during the second week.

NBA 2K19 was released on Nintendo Switch, but this version of the game didn’t even chart, which means it sold less than 3 679 units… which is what the PlayStation 4 version sold, and it almost missed the Top 20. The series isn’t exactly popular in Japan, so it’s no wonder this 2019 entry did so poorly.

Despite Hardware sales increasing very slightly this week, Nintendo Switch Software sales are once again down (as is expected in September). The trinity made of Minecraft, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all saw their sales drop, with 14 752 units (-23%), 14 398 units (-15%), and 11 877 units (-10%) respectively. All three games keep selling healthy amounts every week, and are bound to keep selling through the end of the year (and beyond). LTD sales are at 14 752 units, 14 398, and 11 8777 units respectively.

As for Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!, it’s drawing near the 200 000 units milestone, with 189 619 units sold as of this week. It should reach it in Week 38 (Week 39 at the very latest). It sold 7 004 units this week (-28%), and sales iare expected to keep dropping before stabilizing.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild keeps on selling steadily, with 6 515 units additional units this week (-12%). It’s now sold over 1.1 million units on Nintendo Switch alone (1 105 725 units to be precise).

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

12./09. [NSW] Mario Tennis Aces (Nintendo) – 6.195 / 338.406 (-20%). Sales keep dropping, but not enough for the game to leave the Top 20 from Media Create just yet;
14./14. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 4.803 / 1.720.153 (-16%). It just keeps on selling despite the end of the Summer holidays and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! drawing near;
15./17. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo) {2018.03.16} (¥5.980) – 4.459 / 611.238 (-14%). Sales remain as healthy as Kirby’s insatiable appetite!

Media Create – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales increased slightly: nothing to write home about, but an increase is still an increase! The console sold 43 513 units this week, which is nearly as much as last year during the same week (about 45 000 units sold).

Those sales are pretty good news given the lack of notable releases; there really isn’t anything to boost sales in a significant way until Super Mario Party on October 5th. Last week, we were expecting sales to remain in the 35-50 000 units range in September and October, and so far it looks like this “prediction” was spot on. We will see how long Nintendo Switch sales can remain as stable at this week!

By the way, the console has now sold 5 million units according to Media Create, a couple of weeks after Famitsu announced the milestone had been reached (they have total Hardware sales higher than Media Create).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are slightly down with 7 483 units sold. As expected, sales did drop, but it’s not like they fell off a cliff or anything. We can safely expect the handheld to keep trucking along merrily until the end of the year, without dropping to extremely low levels.
