Japan – Media Create sales for Week 35, 2015 (August 24 – 30) [Top 50]

Media Create reveals that over 13 000 Metallic Red New Nintendo 3DS XL were sold in Japan, during the first four days (between August 27th and August 30th).

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is the one and only star of Week 35 in Japan, with over 584 000 units sold at retail during the first four days. This is slightly worse than the very first Dragon Quest remake on Nintendo DS (Dragon Quest IV), but it’s still a pretty good result: after all, between 60-80% of all units sent to retailers were sold during launch week.

Unfortunately, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will most likely not be one of the so-called “evergreen titles”, which sell a lot on long periods of time (like Animal Crossing: New Leaf). Of course, that doesn’t mean the game will stop selling all of a sudden at the end of September, but it’s unlikely to reach 1 million LTD for example.

The second (and last) new entry for Nintendo platforms during Week 35 is Famicom Remix Best Choice (Ultimate NES Remix), which had a rather decent launch with over 14 000 units sold (roughly 50% of all units sent to retailers). Since this is a “best-of” version of Wii U games, which already got a retail release last year, those sales are not really surprising.

And due to pay day, sales of several games on Nintendo platforms went up during Week 35 in Japan, such as Yo-kai Watch Busters (+1%), Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (+14%) and Mario Kart 8 (+12%). Meanwhile, sales for Splatoon remain surprisingly strong despite the end of the Summer holidays, with 23 403 units sold this week and over 600 000 units since launch… at this rate, 1 million before the end of the year is a definite possibility, especially if you add digital sales.

Hardware-wise, sales of the Nintendo 3DS are boosted by the launch of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and the Metallic Red New Nintendo 3DS XL, and sold 48 919 units during Week 35 (11 000 units more than last year during the same week). Unfortunately, this won’t be enough to compensate for the drop in LTD sales in 2015, compared to 2014.

We’re now entering the last four months of the year, and 2015 will be “competing” with the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS last year in October. It’ll be interesting to see how sales hold for Nintendo’s handheld during those remaining months in 2015, though a significant drop Year on Year is pretty much unavoidable (except maybe during weeks with major launches).

As for the Wii U, its sales are up compared to last week (quite surprisingly). Of course, the rise is barely noticeable (11 781 units vs 11 302), but it’s definitely there. We were expecting a drop for the two weeks before the launch of Super Mario Maker, but it looks like the Wii U might avoid dropping below the 10 000 consoles/week threshold after all.
