Japan – Media Create sales for Week 29, 2015 (July 13 – 19) [Top 50]
Week 29 saw the release of Yoshi’s Wolly World in Japan, and unfortunately, Nintendo wasn’t able to pull the wool over the eyes of Japanese players… The game only sold 31 158 units during the first four days: while this is not really catastrophic, it’s certainly quite disappointing (only ~30% of all units sent to retailers were sold). Now, it remains to be seen if Yoshi’s Woolly World will get a surge in popularity during the upcoming holidays.
Unfortunately, it looks like the new users drawn in by Splatoon were not really interested in the latest Yoshi adventures. Then again, this is nothing new: the Wii U has seen a major decline in sales for many series (compared to their Wii / DS counterparts), as we saw with Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush, etc..
Last week was pretty calm in Japan, with Yoshi’s Woolly World being the only new release for Nintendo platforms.
That being said, the various Nintendo 3DS titles in the Top 20 just kept on selling, such as Yo-kai Watch Busters with over 220 000 units sold during Week 29 (and over 914 000 since launch). The game is basically guaranteed to reach 1 million this week… if it hasn’t already! A rather impressive performance for a mere spin-off… then again, a Yo-kai Watch spin-off is a different beast altogether compared to regular spin-offs.
As for Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken, it sold 23 917 units during its second week (a drop of 82%). Apparently, demand is still rather strong (at least at some retailers), so there’s the possibility word of mouth is at work for this Ace Attorney spin-off (that Shu Takumi would like to turn into its own series).
Hardware-wise, there isn’t much to note. The Nintendo 3DS is slightly down compared to last week, with 26 971 units sold. The launch of a new bundle didn’t have any noticeable impact, but this is hardly surprising since it’s only sold at one retailer. Year on Year, the Nintendo 3DS is still down, though it finally managed to reach the 1 million milestone in 2015!
Finally, the Wii U actually went (very slightly) up this week, still supported by Splatoon: it sold over 11 000 units, which means it gets to stay above the 10 000 units/weeks threshold for yet another week. The impact of Splatoon is quite visible when looking at the sales for the same week in 2014: 11 028 vs 8 209. In fact, the Year to Date total for 2015 will soon overtake the total for 2014, most likely before the end of the month.
