Week 27 saw the release of one game (on two platforms), but it wasn’t on a Nintendo platform. Instead, the usual evergreen titles just kept on selling like they usually, and most of them saw their sales increased during that week according to the latest report from Media Create.

Since the new release wasn’t all that popular, Mario Tennis Aces had no trouble staying at #1 despite sales dropping by 33%. The 32 697 units sold this week allows it to reach the 200 000 units milestone, with 205 614 units sold since launch. There’s no doubt it will reach 300 000 units in just a few weeks, especially with the Summer holidays just around the corner.

Sales also dropped for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch (-26% this week), but it wasn’t enough to prevent it from reaching the 100 000 units milestone. It’s now sold 106 685 units at retail alone, with 19 148 units this week. Another game that will just keep on selling in the weeks and months ahead…

As for the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch, they just seem unstoppable. Splatoon 2 sales are basically flat, with +1% this week. Game sold an additional 16 362 units, bringing the total a little bit closer to 2.5 million units (currently sitting at 2 427 652 units).

Meanwhile, sales increased by a whopping 12% for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is certainly interesting during a quiet week without anything in particular to boost sales. Since launch, over 1 616 256 units have been sold, with 12 090 units during Week 27.

Kirby still hasn’t lost his appetite, with 6 833 units sold this week for Kirby Star Allies (+7%), and 553 604 units since launch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn’t far behind, with 6 322 units sold (+3%), but with nearly twice the total sales (1 037 095 units)… it did come out more than a year ago, after all!

Finally, Super Mario Odyssey is closing the Top 10 from Media Create, with 5 333 units sold this week. Again, sales are slightly up: +5%. This brings the total since launch to 1 761 421 units. All those evergreen titles, as well as the increase in sales for them, shows that Nintendo Switch owners are pretty hungry for games!

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

11./12. [NSW] Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo) – 4.808 / 186.688 (+1%). Game just keeps on selling, and will keep doing so through the rest of 2018;
12./15. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 4.377 / 1.661.368 (+12%). With pre-orders for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! open on Friday, and it will be interesting to see what kind of impact it will have on the sales of this game;
17./16. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit (Nintendo) – 2.995 / 199.273 (-10%). Sales have been steadily dropping for a while now, but it still hasn’t left the Top 20 from Media Create…
20./07. [NSW] Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Nippon Ichi Software) {2018.06.28} – 2.189 / 8.620 (-66%). A slightly better drop than expected for the second week, but sales remains quite low.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped noticeably, most likely due to the lack of new releases, and the upcoming re-release of the Splatoon 2 bundle this Friday (July 13th). Of course, payday last week did provide a slight boost in sales, which is another reason we have a drop this week.

Of course, the drop isn’t nearly enough to be worrying. The console sold 44 237 units this week, which is much more than last year during the same period, when it was stuck in shortage hell. Also, it still accounts for over 50% of total Hardware sales in Japan, which is partly due to its own strenghts, but also the relative weakness of the video game market as a whole…

This week, Nintendo 3DS sales are flat: Media Create reports 7 232 units, which is twice lower than last year during the same period. Unfortunately, comparisons with 2017 are going to get rather ugly, due to the launch of the New Nintendo 2DS XL and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age in July 2017.

Granted, this year, the console is getting 3 new bundles on July 19th (including one with Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, that should be pretty popular), but their impact on sales should be rather limited. Of course, it’s too early to say what of impact they will have (especially in the long term), but it’s pretty clear they will not be able to help compensate the drop in sales compared to last year.
