[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 10, 2019 (March 04th – March 10th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 10, 2019 in Japan.

This week, there’s only a couple of new games in the Top 20 from Media Create, and only one of them is on a Nintendo platforms: Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn. As expected, it sold rather poorly: only 10 607 units during the first few days. In comparison, the original release on Wii sold nearly ten times more: 109 253 units at launch (and nearly 500 000 units LTD). Unfortunately, Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn is most likely going to drop off the Top 20 from Media Create as early as next week, with no long term sales.

Of course, those sales are no surprise for a Nintendo 3DS so late in its lifecycle, and with pretty much the entire market (publishers and players) focused on the Nintendo Switch. It’s definitely one release Nintendo could have done without, just like Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey. Fortunately, it looks like the company is finally ready to leave its handheld behind for good now, though it’s been a while since most of its ressources have been put towards Nintendo Switch projects.

With the exception of Devil May Cry V, the Top 10 is exclusively made of Nintendo Switch titles, and more precisely the usual evergreen tiutles. Since Nintendo Switch sales remain really strong, it’s no wonder Software sales would be the same.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is getting closer and closer to the 3 million units milestone, with 2 932 439 units sold as of this week. As expected, it’s going to reach that milestone before Splatoon 2, though the Inklings won’t be far behind. Weekly sales remain strong: 23 407 units this week, which is only 9% less than during Week 9.

Meanwhile, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is still enjoying strong sales, with 20 101 units sold this week. The drop is a bit steeper than the one for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (-21%), but nothing worrying at all… though it was enough to prevent the game from reaching the 500 000 units milestone this week by a few hundred units!

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, its sales are perfectly flat with 12 301 units sold (-1%). Nintendo Switch are also flat this week, so this perfectly fits: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is clearly one of the must-haves of the console, and this week’s sales are yet another proof of that.

The reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield led to a boost in sales for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!, but this week, sales dropped back a little (though they remain fairly healthy at this point). With 11 394 units sold (-11%), the game is slowly moving towards the 2 million units milestone. It’s most likely not going to reach it at retail, but it will certainly be interesting to see how close to it it will end up.

Along with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the must-haves of the Nintendo Switch. It just keeps on selling, and hasn’t left the Top 20 from Media Create since its launch, over 2 years ago. This is highly unusual for a single player game, let alone a Legend of Zelda game. And it’s far from over: sales increased by 28% this week, with 9 838 units sold (1 317 346 units since launch).

Sales are more or less flat for Super Mario Party and Minecraft, which sold 9 230 units (-7%) and 8 350 units (-3%) respectively. The former has already sold over 1 million units (1 046 789 units to be precise), and the latter will get there eventually (632 871 units LTD).

Finally, Splatoon 2 is lagging behind a little bit, but it’s still selling at a steady pace with 7 739 additional units this week (-14%). With 2 955 316 units sold as of Week 10, it’s pretty clear that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will beat it to the 3 million units milestone, though if you add digital sales, both games have already reached it.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

• 20./21. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 2.693 / 1.960.058. Another game that makes its comeback in the Top 20. It will reach 2 million units at retail alone within the next few months!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are slightly up, which comes as quite the surprise after the bump provided by the reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield. It’s not clear how long that reveal will have an impact on sales, but it’s pretty safe to say that sales will remain strong in the near future (even if sales were to drop slightly). This certainly bodes well for the actual launch of the game, later this year!

With 69 766 units sold this week, Nintendo Switch sales increased by about 1 000 units Week on Week. Last year, the console was selling about 45 000 units during the same week, so that’s nearly a 25 000 units increase Year on Year.

As of this week, the console has sold nearly 800 000 units in 2019 alone with 790 018 units sold. It looks like it will reach 1 million units YTD before the end of the month: it needs only 36 000 units/week to reach that, and even if sales were to drop starting next week, it would require a major drop for that milestone not to be reached. Even if the March line-up isn’t the best ever, there’s still too many games for sales to drop that sharply… not to mention the usual evergreen titles still have tons of selling power left!

The gap between 2019 and 2018 sales is now about 255 000 units, and it just keeps on growing week after week despite a rather lackluster line-up. Total sales are now above 7.6 million units (7 636 802 units to be precise), and it’s more than likely that the 8 million units milestone will be reached during the first half of the year

As for Nintendo 3DS sales, they went back down this week, after a rather unexpected bump during Week 9, despite the release of a new game. Of course, Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn wasn’t going to have any meaningful impact on Hardware sales to begin with… The handheld sold 5 718 units this week, as opposed to 7 500 units last week. Last year, it was selling twice better with 10 248 units.
