[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 49, 2019 (December 02 – December 08) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 49, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

This week, there isn’t a single entry in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu. Unfortunately, that means that Yo-kai Watch 4++ did not even sell 11 521 units, since that’s what the game ranked #10 sold. Such a poor performance is anything but a surprise, given that:

  • the original release already massively underperformed compared to past mainline entries
  • players who already own the original can get all the additional content as paid DLC
  • it’s cheaper to just get the original version used and buy the additional content as DLC
  • the Yo-kai Watch series isn’t nearly as popular as it used to be on Nintendo 3DS

Even though we’re still lacking sales data, it’s pretty safe to say that adding a new platform for the game (PlayStation 4) did absolutely nothing to help sales.

And this week, there also isn’t a single non-Nintendo Switch title in the Top 10, with the usual evergreen titles completely monopolizing it:

  • [NSW] Pokemon Sword / Shield (Pokemon Co.) – 201.838 / 2.224.881 (-27%). Sales dropped once again, but not enough to make it drop below the 200 000 units/week threshold;
  • [NSW] Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Nintendo) – 34.122 / 319.297 (+30%). Thanks to the healthy holiday boost, it has now sold over 300 000 units since launch;
  • [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) – 16.128 / 328.511 (-28%). Sales keep going down, once again due to shortages. The situation should start improving within the next couple of weeks;
  • [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 15.335 / 1.038.091 (+38%). Quite a lot of kids are going to get Minecraft for Christmas this year again!
  • [NSW] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 (Sega) – 15.159 / 77.180 (+45%). As expected, holiday season sales for this game are fairly good, despite the disappointing debut. It should reach the 100 000 units milestone within the next couple of weeks;
  • [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 14.623 / 2.557.915 (+49%). This game is poised to end 2019 on a really high note;
  • [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 13.959 / 3.362.447 (+43%). One year after launch, it has sold over 3.3 million units at retail alone, and 4 million units is pretty much guaranteed at this point;
  • [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 13.872 / 1.177.650 (+47%). Second holiday season for this game, which is still enjoying strong sales (the re-run of the bundle including two Joy-Cons is definitely helping);
  • [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 12.284 / 720.268 (+57%). A healthy holiday boost for this game, which should end up selling around 800 000 units by the end of the year;
  • [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai Namco Games) – 11.521 / 243.913 (+52%). Thanks to the holiday boost, it should have no trouble reaching the 300 000 units milestone by the end of the year.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are surprisingly flat, with 188 501 units sold.

The gap between the Lite and OG model keeps increasing, as the former saw its sales drop once again (66 285 units), while sales of the latter increased (122 216 units). The holiday season is when sales of the Lite model should be above those of the OG model, but it looks like it may not happen at all this year. It’s not so much that the Lite is selling poorly, it’s more that the OG model remains quite attractive, leading to good sales.

Year on Year, the drop is quite harsh for the Nintendo Switch: it sold 278 313 units during the same week last year. Of course, that drop is due to the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released during Week 49 2018, and this year has no such game to boost sales. Even worse, December as a whole is a pretty weak month for new releases this year, with the usual evergreen titles doing all the heavy lifting.

As such, Nintendo Switch sales remain quite good despite the drop, especially as November sales were particularly strong (despite the launch of two popular bundles last year). What’s more, the gap between 2018 and 2019 sales is still roughly 1 million units. The gap is bound to decrease again next week, and through the rest of the month as it’s unlikely 2019 sales will be able to keep up with 2018 sales. It’s not like sales are going to drop off a cliff, though!

YTD sales for the Nintendo Switch stands at 3 731 525 (769 656 for the Lite model, and 2 961 869 units for the OG model), and LTD sales at 10 621 071 (9 851 415 units for the OG model).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did increase noticeably: even the aging handheld is impacted by the holiday season, after all. Of course, sales remain limited with only 4 074 units sold (vs. 1 580 units last week, and 12 487 units last year). This brings YTD sales to 181 118 units (vs. 511 552 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 24 486 082 units LTD.
