[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 42, 2019 (October 14th – October 20th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 42, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 42 saw the release of quite a few Nintendo Switch games, and 3 of them managed to land themselves a spot in the Top 10. The best-selling title is Ring Fit Adventure, which sold 68 497 units during the first 3 days on the market. This is a fairly solid debut, but it remains to be seen how it will sell in the long run. Will it be the new casual game sensation, or will it come and go like Nintendo Labo did? Holiday sales will be crucial for this game.

So far, word of mouth seems fairly strong, so it’s pretty safe to expect sales to remain strong in the next few weeks. It should reach the 100 000 units milestone by the end of the month (or during the first week of November at the latest).

Next, we have Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town at #2 with 66 193 units sold. This is a really strong performance for a remake of GBA game, which mirrors the strong debut of Rune Factory 4 Special. It shows that Story of Seasons fans are definitely ready for more, which is pretty great news for Marvelous who have already confirmed that a brand new entry was in the works.

Here’s how the latest Story of Seasons games sold at launch:

  • Doraemon: Story of Seasons (Nintendo Switch): 42 230 units
  • Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns (Nintendo 3DS): 110 597 units

Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town should be able to match the Week 1 sales of the latest original mainline entry when all is said and done… not bad for a remake!

Finally, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition sold 7 218 at launch, which is a fairly solid performance for a late port of a western game (albeit a popular one). Of course, it’s never going to match the sales of the PlayStation 4 version (over 200 000 units LTD, including the budget re-release), but it’s definitely going to end up as a successful endeavour for Spike-Chunsoft.

Next, here’s how the other games in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu fared this week:

  • 03./02. [NSW] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age S – Definitive Edition (Square Enix) – 15.744 / 401.907 (-38%). Sales have now topped 400 000 units, and it’s all but guaranteed they will eventually reach 500 000 units;
  • 04./01. [NSW] Disney Tsum Tsum Festival (Bandai Namco Games) – 11.824 / 42.174 (-61%). After a satisfactory debut, a satisfactory second week;
  • 05./08. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 9.020 / 970.816 (+23%). A healthy boost brings total sales even closer to the 1 million units milestone (to be reached in early November);
  • 06./07. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 8.305 / 2.496.564 (+8%). The 2.5 million units milestone at retail will be reached next week!
  • 07./09. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 7.964 / 669.445 (+11%). Strong and steady sales;
  • 09./10. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 7.312 / 3.302.948 (+9%). Over 3.3 million units have been sold since launch, and that’s not even counting digital sales!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are slightly down, with 54 067 units sold (vs. 56 680 units last week). The OG model is still the most popular, but the gap is getting smaller: the OG model sold 34 821 units (-4 500 units), and the Lite sold 19 246 units (+2 000 units). The first big bump for the Lite model will come with the release of the Pokémon Sword and Shield model on on November 1st.

So far, the Nintendo Switch Lite has been providing a healthy amount of additional sales for the console (over 300 000 units so far this year), though it’s clearly not anything massive… yet (it will be a different story during the holiday season). Thanks to it, sales are up Year on Year with +10 000 units compared to Week 42 2018. The gap between 2018 and 2019 sales just keep growing, with nearly 700 000 units more for the latter.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 9 608 072 this year alone, and it should reach the 10 million units milestone in November.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sales are perfectly flat with 1 110 units sold this week (vs. 1 041 units during the previous one, and 5 373 units during Week 42 2019). Total sales this year are standing at 169 044 units, far below 2018 sales (which already weren’t stellar, with only 458 666 units sold). This brings total sales to 24 474 008 units sold LTD.
