[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 16, 2019 (April 15th – April 21st) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 16, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 16 was pretty quiet, with only two entries in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu: the two versions of Langrisser I & II. They’re off to a fairly decent start with 21 000 units sold, including about 9 000 units on Nintendo Switch. That’s much better than Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei on Nintendo 3DS, which only sold 7 501 units at launch. Of course, we’re also far from the heyday of the series (113 716 units sold for Langrisser III on… SEGA Saturn, more than 20 years ago).

Since RPG generally tend to have pretty frontloaded sales, both versions of Langrisser I & II will most likely be gone from the Top 10 provided by Famitsu as early as next week.

As for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the release of the first Fighter Pack and the Ver. 3.0.0 update did have an impact on sales, but as expected, that impact is somewhat limited. Sales are basically flat this week, with 11 080 units sold (-2%), which is good news when pretty much all other games saw their sales drop. Total sales are now at 3 029 577 units.

Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04 VR Kit had a good second week, with 9 074 units sold. That’s a 66% drop compared to launch week, which is a fairly solid performance. Here’s how the previous Nintendo Labo kits sold during their respective second week:

05./01. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit <EDU> (Nintendo) {2018.04.20} (¥6.980) – 21.316 / 114.434 <40-60%> (-77%)
17./03. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit <EDU> (Nintendo) {2018.04.20} (¥7.980) – 4.277 / 31.944 <20-40%> (-85%)
16./04. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Drive Kit <EDU> (Nintendo) {2018.09.14} (¥6.980) – 4.724 / 17.904 <20-40%> (-64%)

So far, the VR Kit is performing better than the Robot and Drive Kits, and it will be interesting to see how it sells during the Golden Week (which starts this Saturday, and runs until May 5th).

Finally, Yoshi’s Crafted World sold 9 061 additional units, which brings total sales to over 100 000 units (100 733 units to be precise). It’s definitely going to enjoy strong sales during the Golden Week, which will bring it closer to the 200 000 units milestones.

Here’s how the other games in the Top 10 from Famitsu fared this week:

  • 07./08. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.532 / 737.500 (-6%). Sales are slightly down this week, but they remain strong;
  • 08./04. [NSW] Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission (Bandai Namco Games) – 8.161 / 93.283 (-42%). It should reach 100 000 units LTD next week. After that, it remains to be seen how long it will keep selling once the Golden Week is behind us;
  • 10./09. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo) – 7.299 / 575.844 (-14%). Another drop this week, but sales should go back up starting next week.

After an unexpected bump last week due to the release of Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, Nintendo Switch sales dropped to 40 000 units during Week 16, which is a more “normal” level for a slow month like April (it sold 32 000 units during the same week last year). The drop may seem like pretty bad news (-14 000 units in a week is quite the drop indeed), but it’s actually made worse by last week’s bump.

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold about 46 000 units during Week 14, which implies the console was simply following the expected sales trajectory during a slow month. The one thing we can take away from this is that Nintendo Labo: VR Kit did not have a lasting impact on Nintendo Switch sales, which comes as no surprise given the kit did not do incredible numbers.

This week, the Nintendo Switch passed yet another milestone: it’s now sold over 8 million units, 106 weeks after its launch. It will reach 9 million units later this year, most likely during or right after the Summer holiday season. There’s no doubt it will also reach 10 million units before the end of the year, and unless the holiday season is particularly bad, it should end the year with over 11 million units sold.

The Nintendo Switch will also outsell the PlayStation 4 as early as next week, though Week 18 is the safest bet. Of course, this will be for good: there’s literally zero chance of Sony’s console ever catching up with its hybrid rival once it’s been outsold, especially with the PlayStation 5 on the (distant) horizon and a strong line-up for the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Switch sales in 2019 remain much stronger than last year, with +8 000 units Year on Year for Week 16, and + 300 000 units for YTD sales. It will be interesting to see how much the gap will widen during the Golden Week, which should not be particularly strong this year unfortunately.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales remain perfectly flat, with 3 232 units sold (about 5 000 units less than last year during the same week). It will reach 100 000 units sold in 2019 next week, which is more than 150 000 units less than last year after the same amount of weeks. Finally, the handheld has now sold 24.4 million units since launch.
