[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 13, 2020 (March 23 – March 29) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 13, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 13 saw the release of quite a few games, but the only one that managed to chart is One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, which is off to a somewhat decent start with about 137 000 units sold (including 61 571 units for the Nintendo Switch version). Unfortunately, that’s the worst debut for the series, as you can see for yourself:

  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors (PS3): 627 214 units FW
  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 (PS3 + PSV): about 333 000 units FW
  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 (PS3 + PSV + OS4): about 161 000 units FW

The series has been on a downward trend since the second game, and unfortunately, this 4th entry wasn’t able to reverse it (though the drop is no all that bad, all things considered). This isn’t too surprising, as the novelty factor is no longer a thing: people pretty much know what to expect from the One Piece version of a Warriors game.

The gap between the two platforms is quite smaller than usual for Warriors games (only 14 000 units), and the Nintendo Switch version is expected to end up outselling the PlayStation 4 later down the line (as is the case of many multiplatforms releases that do not end up selling the most units on Nintendo Switch at launch).

But the real star of the week is, once again, Animal Crossing: New Horizons. After a record-breaking launch, the game had an extremely good second week with 727 791 units sold. The drop is fairly limited: -61%, which is unusually good for a game that opened with such strong sales. Sales were so strong, some retailers eventually ended up running out of copies during the weekend.

To give you an idea of just how good those second week sales are: Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold more during its second week on the market than Animal Crossing: New Leaf at launch. Of course, the latter suffered from massive shortages, but it’s still a really impressive result, especially as Famitsu do not track digital sales, and all signs point towards really strong sales on the Nintendo eShop.

With just two weeks on the market, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already sold over 2.6 million units, and it will reach the 3 million units milestone as early as next week. It’s the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game, doing even better than Pokémon Sword and Shield and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (despite them launching during the holiday season).

It will have no trouble outselling both (LTD) within the next few months, and it should be the first Nintendo Switch game to reach the 4 million units milestone at retail. This certainly makes you wonder just how high sales will go!

Highlights this week include:

  • Ring Fit Adventure received a sizeable new shipment this week, with sales increasing by 84%, with 13 819 units. By next week, it will have sold over 750 000 units LTD, and the 1 million milestone is drawing ever nearer.

Overall, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are faring rather well: sales are either flat or slightly down. Lots of players are still really busy with Animal Crossing: New Horizons though!

As expected, Nintendo Switch sales dropped noticeably during Week 13, which isn’t really a surprise: Week 12 was the best week ever for the console (even better than launch week), after all. But the thing is, that drop is much more limited than expected, with 282 561 units sold; those are sales you rarely get to see outside the holiday season, even after the release of a major game.

And as expected (again), it’s the OG model that saw the biggest drop in sales: it went from 129 473 units to 51 890 units sold. The reason: the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle completely sold out, and the next shipment is expected to reach retailers by the end of next week (early April was the window given by Nintendo).

Sales also dropped for the Lite model: they went from 263 103 units to 230 671 units. Unfortunately, not even the Lite model is spared by shortages now, and both model are hard to find in stores. As such, sales are bound to take a big hit starting next week, though the next shipment of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle will help alleviate the effect of shortages.

It looks like Nintendo did save a significant amount of Nintendo Switch units for the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Now, it remains to be seen how dire shortages will become in the upcoming weeks, as the production and shipments of new Nintendo Switch units are still heavily impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Nintendo Switch sales are, once again, significantly up Year on Year: the console only sold 49 852 units during the same week last year. The gap between 2019 and 2020 keeps growing, with 1 700 352 units sold in 2020 (vs. 969 223 units). What’s more, if not for shortages, the Nintendo Switch would have sold over 2 million in 2020 before the end of the quarter, and before 2019 sales reached 1 million units.

2020 is poised to become the best year ever for the Nintendo Switch, though it’s obviously too early to say for sure: we still don’t know anything about the second half of the year after all, and current events only add more uncertainty (production delays, possible impact on game development, etc.).

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 13 million units, with over 2 million units for the Nintendo Switch Lite, and 11 million units for the OG model. That’s a lot of milestones for a single week!

Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS dropped back to 3 digit sales, with 940 units sold (vs. 1 022 units last week, and 5 056 units during the same week last year). It’s only sold 15 170 units this week (vs. 86 500 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and LTD sales now stand at 24 511 317 units.
